Welcome  and no, none of the other species of poppies will do you any good.

They say that all poppies contain alkaloids, but Papaver Somniferum, and Papaver  setigerum are the only ones that contain opium.

They also say California Poppies can give a nice buzz, but I've never tried them by themselves, and I mixed it with Somniferum to make tea when I tried it.

That tropical storm rolled through here and kicked my gardens ass!
I have been since early this morning salvaging what I could.

I went ahead and just harvested these, because they were all laying flat on the ground.
They were going to be my pods for seeds, but oh well....

I have tons of pics that I've taken of my poppies over the past couple months or so. I'm just super lazy with uploading pics because I accumulate so many and I have to go through the process of wiping/deleting the EXIF data from all the pics, then re-sizing/cropping them, then uploading to the site...with the 100s & 100s of pics that I've taken over the past few months (and not just of poppies) it always takes so damn long to go through them all....

...but I might try to do that later today lol.

I have one poppy plant left that I sowed a few weeks later than everything else...It grew all by itself so its roots had a lot of room, it is looking glorious with its 4 fat & immaculate glaucous frosted pods (tho it is starting to lean/droop a bit with the weight of the pods and the recent winds), probably has another week or so before its seed is ripe....Other than that all my poppies are pretty much finished, I'll be cutting the last pods off the plants and splitting em' open for seed later today.

Nice.

A bit late in the season but they look healthy. Since it is a bit late into the season, I'm curious to see how quickly they bolt up to flower and how large the seed pods get. (from my understanding, poppies started later in the spring will tend to bolt up sooner and produce smaller pods compared to those started early in the season).

When did you sow those seeds and what sort of climate/region do you live?

Beautiful!...

That red is such a RED RED lol...The epitome of red lol.

I can only imagine how vibrant they must be in person when seen with the eye.

I live in midwest usa.

I sowed them in march 31st. So it was kinda late. My first set died. This was second attempt. They only get half days sun and shade the rest.

You know that storm blew down all my somniferums, but barley touched my Papaver rhoeas, and Papver Orientale's. I was supposed to have some Icelandic poppies too, but it proved to be just too hot for them, I reckon.

Here they are today.  Growing like a weed. Sheesh.

I'm so excited to see these. I just really want the seeds.

The X-247 is growing faster than the buddha and BWC.

BWC is the slowest one. It's more flat a d spread out. Bushy let's say.

I hope pesky neighbors dont notice. I have couple junkies that live behind me. And one in recovery on the side of me. I have privacy fence so that helps.

Like you guys said, I dont think they will get too tall so might not be an issue

All the x247 has flower pods. The other varieties dont yet. .

I'm excited to see what colors they bring.

Seeds appear to be viable too, despite the fact that I harvested them a bit too early.
