Has anyone been having much luck in central Auckland? I've been looking for mainly subs but still haven't had any luck. I'm relatively new to this but last season I was finding medium-large patches 3/4 the time I went hunting. Just interested to see whether it's just me or others too.

Do you have any more info on these the page on wikipedia doesn't have much (Is the stem bare, what cap...) What are the deadly look alikes? I think I may have seen them I will have to grab some to do spore prints.
I might take your photos to add to a updated New Zealand FAQ

Just slim pickings as far as tasmaniana goes. Found a grand total of 4 specimens at a random slope near my house. Such a fat yield! Not...
Hey Roger always great photos! Are tasmaniana the same potency by weight as subs? Do they bruise blue? Is there an identifying characteristic you look for?
Agreed about the low yield season. I'm down by half the previous two seasons. Is it just me or is the season getting shorter and the competition getting tougher?
Thank you. I made an effort to take nice photos but I got very low yields.
They are probably not as potent as subs, but they are fairly potent.
They do not bruise as blue as subs do, but look at the picture of the big one that I took on my shirt, you can see the obvious blue bruising on the veil remainder. That's a giveaway.
Not really keen to get too deep into the identifying characteristics, if you know about the lesser-known Psilocybe tasmaniana, then you know about them. If not, then you don't. They are more of a species for the more advanced psilocybe identifier to go after if you ask me.
To me the gills are the giveaway. They have big prominent purple gills. And they have a sticky brown pileus.
They are not the best blue bruisers, sometimes only the margin and veil remaint bruise blue, sometimes it's hard to see any bruising on the stipe and cap at all.
The season is getting shorter (no where near enough rainfall) and there are so much more other hunters to compete with, quite a lot of people seem to be out and about doing the mushroom hunting thing as well.
This year I find myself going deep into the bush and lifting up flax leaves where my competition is too dumb to check...</font></font>

Yeh man more pics more info!
I went out today and yesterday for a couple of hours and looked at a duck load of habitat, but only found look alikes. Like - orange tinged subs, dark black nipple headed subs, crazy red ones but yeh not the mofo I’m looking for. Think I saw my first Gallerina margarita or whatever they’re called. Lots of orange shit with a skirt.

Fucken Oats I’m lucky they weren’t galleys! However despite the colour of some Leratiomyces phenos being confusing to colour-blindies the colour difference of Galerina is more obvious; or so I’ve heard, so less mixups there. Also the Galerina spore print is a dead giveaway. The LM spore print is even more misleading.
Interestingly there were no adverse side effects for either of the two parties who ingested. Just confusion as to why they were still sober after 60 minutes.

Great to see some successes!
This is my first season out having a bit of a look and it's much harder than it was when I imagined how it would go. Seeing that there are some out an about in AK region is heartening. I keep seeing signs of other people having a look, so I think I'm on the right track.
I saw some Scleroderma albidum, which have a very distinct purple color, but also pretty poisonous apparently. Starting to see how general mycology is pretty fascinating.
Is it likely Auckland might have a bit of a boost if we get some decent rain and lower temperatures?

Dude starting you’re taking the piss, I looked for 4 hours in sub habitat in 2 massive locations and found every other orange or black sub lookalike that would make you bleed out the back passage. FFS! I did manage to transplant some mycelium in wood chips from a patch that the council have destroyed to replant the garden - so hopefully that fruits again!

That's the dream starting over, your own private patch. We found some growing at my friend's house, it's so nice to be able to watch them grow without having to worry about someone coming and pulling the young ones out.... mind you the slugs seem pretty keen on them too.

Hey @Dolan, you're right I've had a bit of luck for sure. I've only found two reasonable patches though. From what I can gather it is still a slow season. I remember around 8 years ago there was a patch with well over a hundred growing right next to my work. I've never seen anything like it. I hadn't gotten back into them at that stage though. It ended up getting destroyed because I foolishly told some people I worked with about it.
I think I'm pretty much done for the season now so will most likely just be sharing pictures, and updates on my backyard. I'd actually taken a small piece of turf with some fruit and was transplanting it when I discovered there was some already there (my backyard). I guess fate has been on my side.
They are out there man, I'm sure you'll have some more luck soon.

Hey Sam, yeah it's going to be pretty cool to be able to watch them grow in peace. When I was a young guy I didn't understand the etiquette of the hunter gatherer so sadly used to pull up everything I found. Those days it took hours of walking off track in pine forests though, it's certainly different now.

Yeah prior to this year I'd done a few sporadic hunts in England Oz and down south of nz always with people who knew what they were looking for. I'm surprised in retrospect that etiquette was never mentioned. This site has been a great source of information regarding that and other things. If only all hunters were active members, the spots that wouldn't get destroyed not to mention the new ones that would likely be started... (something I want to start attempting). I'm in your position of having enough already for this year but still enjoy going out for a walk to see what's popping up. I'd also like to have a go at finding some in a forest, just not sure where to start.
