Do mushrooms in the fridge lose potency? 1

Hi!
The mushrooms that are currently growing are maturing individually so I decided to put them in the fridge until there's enough of them to use the dehydrator.
Do you think this is a good idea or will they lose a lot of potency if they stay 2-3 days in the fridge before going in the dehydrator?
Thank you!

they won't lose potency or at least not enough to notice. think about how long you normally store edible mushrooms in the fridge after you buy them. they should be perfect for up to 1-2 weeks though i would dehydrate ASAP

Yeah, I'm not too worried about them rotting but more about potency loss.
The thing is it seems like a waste of energy to run the dehydrator with 5-6 small mushrooms inside, so I'm trying to harvest as many as possible before using it lol

might just want to put the few you have on a small wire rack and put a fan directly on them... will dehydrate them, just at a slower pace.

No they won't lose much from my experience. Just last friday I had a couple mushrooms that had been sitting in my fridge veg. compartment for 3 days I think. They were exactly as potent as I would have expected that dose to be, but a little less than instantly consumed fresh ones. I would say 1 week is the max if you want to keep them potent. Btw drying also loses potency so keep that in mind if you are consuming them soon.

Drying loses potency?!? I knew weed loses a ton of potency if you don't dry it right... had no idea mushrooms did!

Weed does not lose potency from not drying right, it might get moldy or be too dry, but no, it would not lose potency. That's why you can dry/cure buds however you want if you're planning to just make hash or oil out of the plant, one way or another it's just the extracted material so it doesn't matter how it's handled after it's mature.

I’ve read others discussing the matter around here, saying that you lose up to 25% potency in dehydration. Up to 50% of the psylocin and less than that of the psilocybin, if memory serves.

I put mine in the fridge until I get enough to run the dehydrator. Never seen a noticeable drop in potency from doing this.

2-3 days in fridge is fine. Keep in a paper bag. Fresh shrooms can last about a week in the fridge.

Melting temp of psilocybin is 250F. Dehydrators top out at 160F. How can there be any loss of potency?

Everything I’ve read on the subject (which admittedly is not a ton) states that some psilocin moves to the surface of the mushroom and oxidizes. This is the blue/green tint you see start forming pretty much right after picking. Once oxidized, it’s no longer “potent,” meaning your body cannot convert it into psilocybin any longer.
My memory isn’t as clear about Information regarding the loss of psilocybin in the mushroom. It could even be that what I read was ONLY talking about the loss of psilocin and how that impacted the total amount of psilocybin once ingested.

Of course. I was addressing his comments on dehydration, not oxidation.

Not sure I follow. The process of dehydration involves exposing the fruit to a current of heated air for several hours. Are you looking at the isolated result of water being removed from the fruit, ignoring the process by which it happens, and referring to that as “dehydration?”
If that’s what you’re referring to, I guess I’d agree that “removing water from the fruit” (without context of the process of said removal) can’t be said to reduce potency. I’m not sure I see any value in that distinction though, since I’m not aware of anyone dehydrating using a process that doesn’t introduce massive amounts of oxygen.
Or maybe I’m completely misunderstanding you, or I understand the process even less than I think.

I see this mentioned quite often and it’s irrelevant. Potency poss would occur because things tend to react faster at higher temperatures.
However, through the years it’s been figured out that potency loses are almost unobservable when drying with a dehydrator. And, you’ll get way bigger losses with fruits that weren’t dried correctly.

My point is just dehydrating at max temp (160F on typical dehydrator) ASAP after harvesting is the best way to preserve potency and ensure safe storage. I've seen so many people assert that dehydrating at low temp for longer is better for potency. No no no.
