Oat jars colonizing, debating which tek to use them for - bottle tek possible?
    #26735471 - 06/10/20 08:47 PM (3 years, 7 months ago)

First time doing my own jars, and I'm contemplating what set up I want to go with once they're ready.

I have been intrigued by Mudas bottle tek, but am not sure how I would go about it using already colonized grain?

Alternatively, I thought about shoe boxes, using a half quart per each (I have two quarts of two different types going currently).

Much appreciate any input or ideas!

Shoeboxes are easy. Mix one quart jar per box with about a quart of coir. You really dont need anything else. Mix it right in the box. Rehydrate the coir first then mix in the colonized grains. Once its mixed, pat it down flat and put the top on. Leave it alone for a few weeks.

About 110g of compressed coir from a brick with 500ml of water works well. i find a straight 1:5 ratio makes the coir a little bit wet.

It seems one of the bottle teks big selling points is convenience. In that spirit, you could case a quart jar with pasteurized potting soil (or even just bubble wrap! look it up) and put a ziploc bag over it for a tiny fruiting chamber. The rest of your jars could go to bulk

Bubble wrap? Hm nice! I'll have to look that up.

Yeah, simplicity seems to be the name of the game for bottle tek. Perhaps I'll shoe box these jars, or maybe try casing one too, and just start up some ziploc twist locks separately with the remaining plates I have going.

That's how I have been doing it and it has been working great. I have not even been heating the coir either, although it sounds like taking that step may be beneficial.

Good luck tou are very close. Once you have a few colonized and clean jars the hard part is over. At least in my limited experiance.
