Agar transferring and yields
    #26734827 - 06/10/20 04:26 PM (3 years, 8 months ago)

I was wondering is there any correlation between when isolating/amount of agar transfers and yields? For example, if you get a clean nice looking culture already at T2 and is ready to go to grain, will you still get the same quality of mushroom than if you had done transfers all the way to T3, T4, etc.?

I think the quality comes down to genetics, but a few transfers wont cause degeneration. I kinda think the more transfers you do and isolate, the more the genetics are zeroed in on. Its like when you look at a microscope..you see blur..then you focus in on it, as it focuses, those genes become developed more from the starting point of the focus, so I dont think a few transfers will harm anything

Yeild may be caused by genetics in other words.

Right, so once you have a clean healthy culture lets say on T2 then there isn't any reason at all or benefit to just keep on transferring all the way to T5 or T6 then correct?

You transfer for multiple reasons.

1) To get away from contams and obtain a clean culture.

2) To isolate genetics.

Once you have a clean culture you can keep transferring if you want to try and isolate genetics but the benefits are not linear with each transfer. T1, T2, etc are just labels of how many transfers you made. You are not necessarily improving genetics with each transfer. A T5 is not necessarliy better in anyway then a T6 except you may have reduced the number of strains, which would help you get to an isolate quicker... but you won't know what you have until you fruit it out...you could transfer 100 times... have an isolate and it could be a poor performer.

If that makes sense.

So if your goal is to obtain a clean culture then fruit it out...then clone then isolate..then you don't need to keep transferring.

If you goal is to isolate...then fruit it out... then go ahead and keep transferring.
