First LI attempt questions.

Soaking grains today to jar and pressure cook tomorrow for my first attempt at LI inoculation. My cooker holds 10 jars so 8 will be grain jars and two will be water jars for sterile water. I’m going to use two separate agar pucks in the water jars so maybe if one isn’t clean all won’t be lost. First question is is it okay to use my jar lids with a hole in them for my strike water jars? Wasn’t sure if this cause an issue since it’s full of liquid.
Second question is that these overgrown agar plates I have look super clean but the myc is crawling up the side of the jars. Should I just cut large pieces from the center of the plate or go for the whole puck?
First jars I did was with Bods oat prep tek but this time I’m going to try an overnight soak followed by a few hours of draining tomorrow followed by 2hr PC. Boiling 8 to 10 jars worth of grain just takes too long and I don’t have the time. Hoping this Will work out. Any advice?
Thanks.

for your sterile water, do not use a lid with hole. Use a unmodified jar and lid and tighten the lid so it creates a seal.
Also, i dont use the entire puck, I usually just cut it into a big circle. But if your using glad mini round you can tiger drop it

Thank you for the reply. The agar I’m using this time is in half pint jars. I also use PP5 Ziploc containers with twist tips that are similar to half mini rounds. What exactly is tiger dropping? Is that when you squeeze the sides to separate the puck from the container?

Yes. Its where you take the glad mini round and push in the sides to loosen the agar puck, then you open your sterile water (or grain) and drop the whole puck inside. Quick and easy and no need to scalpel the agar.

I’d definitely use a modded lid lol. I’ve been using mine with the quarter sized sfd piece RTV over 1/4” hole. No real water gets out at all during the shake, the filter gets a lil moist.
The first time I tried I used a regular metal lid and it created a seal and a vicious vacuum. I couldn’t open the thing to save my life. Tried getting my scalpel blade up under to pierce the seal and everything. Finally I took the jar out of the SAB and was just going to muscle the lid off, still couldn’t get it lol. I ended up flaming a thin drill bit and releasing pressure that way.
I was sure it was fucked after hearing all that air rush in. I just threw a germination plate in there and shook. I ended up getting spawn, then mushrooms. 2 out of 6 got mold during/after the first flush but still produced well so I was pretty lucky.
If they’re wrapped in parafilm I’d probably just drop the whole thing in cuz it’s quicker and less touching involved than cutting around the whole thing.

What I do to remove the sealed lid is, place an alcohol soaked paper towel over it and take a butter knife (sterilized in PC with foil) and press iver the towel unto the lid (from outside) and pop it up and off. I have never had issues and this is how i always do it. I think the non modified lid and vacuum seal is the way you want to go. If you have a soaked alcohol paper towel over the jar, the air intake doesnt suck in contams. Again, I have done it like this always with no issues at all.

It’s weird because I know people use unmodded lids all the time for food stuff and I figured I should just be able to pop the lid off like you say. I wonder if I created more of a vacuum by taking it out as soon as the pressure dropped on the PC. I was rushing so I could sleep and took the hot jar right out and I was watching it bubble like a mofo. Almost like it was boiling inside once I took it out. I set it back in the warm water after a while and it quit but idk enough about pressure to say if that makes sense. Either way that muda was freakin stuck and I was totally unable to get it off so I’ve gone to my normal lids

Ah..yes maybe!! I keep mine in the PC for 4 hours after pressure drops and vent valve closes.
