Surface dried out

I notice when I put a tub into fruiting a bit too early and/or the surface dries out there gets to be this thick mat like consistency on the surface and the pinset is usually terrible except along the edges. Which makes sense because the moisture along the walls of the tubs will sometimes condense and drip down onto the surface which hydrates the edges. Besides the obvious preventative measures I should be taking, is there anyway to help save a tub that suffers from this once it happens? I do mist asap but the mat like cover tends to keep the water on the surface and not let it absorb into the substrate.

What exactly do you mean by putting it to fruiting? Most people these days maintain same conditions from spawn until the sub is spent.

I put tubs into fruiting immediately. You cant put them into fruiting too early lol.
Don't poke your substrates don't scrape them with a fork. Pins can and will form right off the matted surface. People keep it too wet worry about misting leave it completely alone is probably your best bet. It matted up to protect itself from your overmaintenance
I only ever matted up tubs i fucked with too much and overmisted. And they only kind of recover if you stop overmisting them

Yeah I used to have that all the time and they’re never quite the same after no matter what.
As the alcoholics say you can’t unpickle a cucumber.
It sounds like you just need to make sure the humidity stays up the whole time. Recently I’ve been finding out that it’s way better to have dry mycelium if you’ve got low humidity. If it’s dry it doesn’t seem to mind much but if it’s wet and the humidity drops then it dries out and gets all shiny and matted.

Removing the tape over holes and replacing with poly. I think I was just introducibg too much fae and not maintaining proper surface moisture

Yea absolutely, in the future I will definitely keep on top on proper fae and surface moisture. I have 4 tubs that have this condition right now so was just hoping there was some hope to help them out.

Hey how did you make out with the matted tubs?
I recently have the same issue and what im trying is adding a casing layer, flipping the sub and floating the whole sub.
So far im seeing some new pins in the middle.

I have a couple cultures going that mat themselves. I don't mist at all from spawn until they fruit and it still mats up. Doesn't affect anything and pins fine. Monotubs are supposed to be set and forget. If you have to mist you need to make adjustments.

True. For me I beleive i selected a matting sub strain on agar. It even looked matted on agar.
That with a tad bit to much fae / drying surface and slightly dry sub prep , my tubs matted out hard. No pins are comming until i flipped the sub upside down and soaked it for few hours.
I also cased another one and it looks like the myc is colonising it a bit and starting to pin.
Another method I wana try is spraying the rubbery matting off with a kitchen sprayer.
Everyone says leave it and it will pin eventually , but mine is not guna pin anytime soon, its been weeks, matting just gets thicker. SO i had to take action.

Soo... how'd it go? I have 6 shoeboxes that dried on the surface and only had a few fruitbodies here and there along the edges. i put half in a mini martha and took the liner off and they all are just turning into a big myc block, cant hardly see the coir anymore. the other half i misted and put the tops back on. I wont drag on and on about the process but i cant pinpoint what is dif that made this happen. field capacity? leaky box lids? I've read ppl say shoeboxes in general dry out. i was thinking inject sterile water with syringe. can i save the ones i haven't introduced fae yet? will you share your results did they fruit through the mat. they didnt start to solidify till i pt them in the martha. 87%rh and fan 5 mins on /45 off. I like the perlite idea to, they are elvated 6 inchs on oven rack and i think next time i will add few inch of moist perlite... thank you

SO i experimented a little bit...
as to why the issue happened, for me I beleive it was a combination of bacteria present and dried out sub surface. Although I could have selected a matting substrain as well who knows.
But i found a few ways that fixed the issue.
1) Spraying all the matted myc off under a siunk faucet ( Rehydrating it as well at the same time) After I did this and kept surface conditions up, it fruited Nice nice clusters.
2) Flip the entire substrate upside down and case with verm. - This worked wonderfully aswell, nice fat ass clusties.
Alot of my fruits had bacterial cap damage though so this is why I beleive it was matting due to bacteria.
All you gotta do is open that bitch up, flipping and casing was prob the best option. Also float that shit if you feel its to dry. Hope this helps.
