Funny story bout reusing petri dishes
    #26733643 - 06/10/20 07:13 AM (3 years, 7 months ago)

I had 10 used plastic petri dishes. Soaked them in bleach and scrubbed them, then added agar.

I inoculated 3, and left the other 7 til later.

5 days later:

-of the three I inoculated, one was green, one had mycelium, one had nothing.

-of the 7 i did nothing to: 4 were green, 2 had mycelium, one had nothing.

It's good that your using and learning to use agar..

I think everyone for there fist time has a story.

Did you learn anything, and what are you going to do to improve your sterile technique?

Yeah any microscopic piece of mycelium will take off, I did the same thing.

I had an old plate with a tiny bit of dried agar inside and when I was pouring plates I had a little bit left over so I poured it in the old one to use as a cooling plate.

Couple weeks later I looked at it and the dried flake of agar had sprouted myc which had spread through the whole agar puck I had poured on it. It looked cool none of the myc was on the surface.

Why do you think you have mycelium in a dish you didn’t inoculate? It’s very likely a white mold.  Feel free to post pics, and sounds like you need to work on your sterile game!
