If I use 5 lb of pasteurized straw will 2 and 1/2 pints of brf spawn be enough to colonize the substrate? Will I need to add anything else to the straw

The more spawn you use, the faster the re-colonization will be, therefore, less time for contaminants to crawl in your work.
Sounds like you have way less spawn than ideal. It MIGHT work though. It just might take more time to colonize the entire tub.

^^it should work if everything is clean. Spawn rates of 1:100 are normal in commercial cultivation. Of course they have cleaner cultures than ms inoculation, and nice clean rooms

Spawn rates of 1:100, they supplement their subs with added nutrition like rice bran powder and brown sugar, and so subs are STERILIZED this way.. this will give your mycelium something to feed on as they colonize the sub.

The mushroom cultivator recommends spawning in said manner to piles of untreated woodchips. This is outdoors, of course.
Im not arguing with you. It's a high spawn rate, especially with brf cakes already being diluted with verm. But it's totally possible

Yea Could probably work. But on a commercial standpoint, at least from where I live, that's how growers accomplish 1:100 spawning ratio.

I would definitely not try to use all that bulk sub. You’ll likely get much more mushrooms and less mold if you go for a simple shoe box with that. 1:1.5 ratio or so.
