How do flashlight battery ratings work? 1

I have this Cree UltraFire flashlight that uses BRC18650 3.7v 3000mah batteries.
What does that all that crap mean?
What would happen if I put in a battery that was mostly the same but was 9000mah? What would happen if I put in a battery that is also 3000mah but is 5V?
Can I burn out the bulb? Overhear the flashlight?
Can I make it brighter or have a longer life with a different battery?
What the hell are all the battery ratings and what do they mean?

Im not a expert but my vape uses flat top 18650's, and a flashlight I just comes today uses button top 18650's,I think mah is just how much electricity it can hold, I dont think 9000mah 18650's exsist, I think 3000mah is about as high as they go, but you can use any mah battery, it will just run longer or shorter depending on the number
if a battery had a higher voltage I think the bulb would be brighter, but it would be bad for the flashlight, might break it
after I wrote all that out I queried it and found this https://www.quora.com/What-does-mAh-say-3-000-mAh-mean-in-a-battery?share=1

The volts is the output, the mah is milliamps which is basically the capacity. Ever bought R/C cars before? Same deal. Different voltages and different amperages. Volts have to match each other for the bulb and battery and amperages is the power capacity of them and can be higher or lower. Thats my understanding.
I wouldnt but a higher voltage battery, it wont work right.

Volts are going to be the same for 18650’s, 4.2 volts topped off. The 3.7 is where it will be at with voltage drop, it’s the nominal voltage. The mah is the life of a charge and what you’ll want to know is how many amps it’s rated for and make sure any bulb you attach it to doesn’t pull more than the constant discharge rating of the battery.
Another thing to worry about is ‘re-wraps’ and counterfeit batteries which surprisingly is really common along with bullshit ratings. None of that stuff is really regulated so you’ll see like 40 amp 18650’s which is all horseshit. Pulse ratings are not real they mean nothing. So stick to samsung, sony, molicel, LG, Panasonic, Sanyo.
This place is a ‘trusted source’ for legit li-ion batteries.
Disclaimer! - Always practice safe battery handling. No torn wraps, no dents etc and make sure they’re either in the flashlight or in a case. The link above will send you free cases if you buy batteries in pairs.

Since we’re on the subject, there are high powered flashlight forums. I pulled this one up real quick..
http://candlepowerforums.com/vb/forumdisplay.php?4-General-Flashlight-Discussion
I can’t remember which one I used to fact check on but I think it’s the above one so you can dig in there and find out everything you need to know. #1 thing you’re going to want to get down is battery safety and how li-ions work because they can vent and go into thermal runaway which is bad news especially in a tightly sealed flashlight tube..

dont the make the flashlights to vent safly if that happens, I know vapes will loosen up if a battery starts venting

Most likely there are some that do and some that don’t, it would be something to check for when you pick a flashlight. The majority of new ones most likely will I would think. I wouldn’t put my faith in some vent holes though if a battery decided to run away, it’s still a bad scenario.

So if I get a 18650 3.7 battery rated at 9900mah for my flashlight is it going to blow the light bulb?

That rating sounds fake. The higher the mah the lower the amp rating and vice versa. So the balance is between how long the battery will last per charge and how much power it can dump. You’re going to want the power the flashlight needs to be under the Constant Discharge rating and then find the highest mah within that range so the life of each charge is the longest.
Make sure you’re getting legit batteries, the brands I mentioned, and not rewraps or counterfeits..

It's Miliamp hour. It's a unit that measures amperage over time. More MaH, bigger battery.

The same size battery can have different mah. It translates over to lifetime of a charge.
18650’s can have different mah depending on make up of the battery.

I dont think he literately means the physical size of the battery, he means the capacity

The mah and amps raise at the expense of each other though. The higher the mah, the lower the amp rating has to be and vice versa..
