MrB's First Grow (and Post)
    #26732035 - 06/09/20 05:16 PM (3 years, 7 months ago)

Hey!  Been reading enough of the resources here, I thought now seemed as good a time as any to make a post!

Just started my first grow on Mother's Day!  Decided as a first attempt my best bet was probably the classics.  Hopped onto Sporeworks and picked up the 4 syringe deal, opting to start with Golden Teachers (also nabbed B+, PES Amazonian, and Burma).  Decided to make a SGFC and use BRF Cakes.  Pretty much followed The Instructions to a tee to this point.

I'm now 2 days into them being in the SGFC and am working on getting a feel for how much to mist / how much to fan / the 'look' of the chamber that I should be shooting for.  These pics are immediately after misting, so the walls are a bit wet.

I'm pretty sure my humidity is a bit low right now, but I just moved it from a large bedroom that had a fan on, which I think was drying things out, to a basement bathroom with a small window.  This served a few purposes; namely getting it out of my room, but also that window still gives plenty of ambient light, and I can open it for short bursts to bring up the temp and humidity in the room a bit.  As long as I'm diligent about my fanning (still shooting for 5-8 times a day as I remember) I shouldn't have to worry about FAE (I also fan the door to the room itself to completely recycle the room once a day or so).

ANYWAY, cautiously optimistic, and hoping for some pins in the next handful of days.  Love to hear any constructive criticism, as I'm flying by the seat of my pants.

Thanks for the resource, everyone!

Never run a fan with a SGFC. Otherwise everything looks pretty good

Thanks, pasty! For some reason it’s making me anxious! Hope they pin in a few days!

1 day post move to the new room and humidity levels are significantly better looking. Still dialing in my misting and fanning but very happy with the move so far.

e: missed that you were replying to pasty.

As to why mine is doing better, presumably it’s the lack of the overhead fan (the bedroom fan is always on to gently move air) and a smaller physical room area, so easier to hit and maintain target humidity. Also helps as it’s not a room we pass through frequently or really at all, as the new room is in the basement, so I can more easily control the FAE.  Otherwise constant motion dries out the contents of a SGFC.  I assume that’s the reason we only fan ~6 times a day instead of just putting a table fan on it.

I never fan a SGFC. Just misting it’s displaces enough air to start the evaporation. As for FAE, it’s full of holes, more than enough FAE for cubes.

Finally starting to see some new growth around the bases of my cakes. Fuzzing up a bit over some of the verm coating them. Hopefully that’s a good sign that they are prepping to pin.

Update; not seeing much happening tbh.

Have some fungal growth on a few in small amounts, like this.

But even that isn’t uniform across all cakes. Some have a very light blueing.

Reading up in others posts it’s looking like I maybe need to stop fanning for a bit or even cover some holes. I think I was mostly worried that I’d water log them, but maybe 30h-40h with some of the holes taped and a big mist to really wet the perlite would be good.

Keep the box steamy once you get pins then you can fan your heart out and lower the mositure content.

Don’t cover the holes, that can actually lower the humidity. I would check that the perlite it still wet, and stop fanning. Fanning is a outdated practice from the 90’s that was necessary because people were trying to grow in a sealed fish tank with no holes. The mister displaces plenty of air. Remember fanning is meant to dry things out, that’s the reason we do it.

I would watch that bubbly white growth, looks suspicious.

Thanks oculo! Glad it looks like I came to the right conclusion on my own!! I’ll keep thread posted as I get some progress.

@pasty, assume I’m keeping my eyes on off-smells mostly, and discoloration?  I’ll keep my eye on it.

Enlisted the help of a small humidifier on the opposite side of the small room to try to get humidity up to 95%+.  Also got a hygrometer in there now for better monitoring

Hahaha the difference in conditions in their is insanity now. Assuming I’ll only have to open and close the door a couple times to move air in their. Every surface now ‘foggy’ in the whole room. Still only up to 82% so far lol

You should use more perlite, at least 5”. Use a pencil to ensure the holes in the bottom are not clogged with perlite, this will prevent the chamber from working correctly.

I have about 4.5” in there currently. Could be because it was a cold room, it’s defogged a bit since then.

Been doing humidifier cycling (crank it to as high as the hygrometer will read, spritz my box then turn off the humidifier until things drop, then start it up again. Still no pinning as of yet. Ugh.

Also validated that no holes are plugged.

How long did you consolidate? It’s best to go at least 10 days but a week is often considered the minimum. Shorter consolidation periods mean longer wait times for pinning.

They were in jars a touch over 4 weeks. All cakes were 100% (visibly) colonized midway through week 3 I want to say. So probably a little light on colonization.  I’ll keep being patient!!
