@ Radsquatch; yeah that tub is dry as hell. I'd give it 2-3 light mistings today, til you see all the light brown coir turn a darker brown. Should be a walnut brown.

How do you go about getting fruiting strains from spores? I’ve always heard edibles were easier with live cultures and clones.

Don't worry about the masses of rude gatekeepers...

Basically I just xfer (usually once or twice) till I have a clean plate then I take a wedge and make an LC from the first clean plate to test out how a culture does with a lot of diversity (most are just fine). I then proceed if it still seems interesting to separate out colonies on different plates until I have "non competitive colonies" to work with and make an LC from each of those for trial runs. Once the trials have finished I bank 10 Ml vials of the winner LC in the fridge for future use and the rest get balked. One drop of LC from the bank will make a new plate which can make gallons of new LC within a matter of weeks for production runs.

My LC recipe is 1 TBSP organic rice flour (I prefer white but brown is fine as well as other flours like millet, Rye, etc) and a pinch of peptone per 600 Ml of water in a quart mason jar PC'd for 15 minutes. This works well with most fungi I have encountered.

Each mushroom has it's own preferences. Not much difference between psychoactive and edible/medicinal fungi. IME clones and MS colonies are equal with their pro's and con's and there is no "set in stone" rule about which one works better.

My lesson of the month:

Don't use low nutes agar for plates you're planning to transfer to grains. Shit's slow to jump off. I got to do some experiments with various nute levels to find the optimum.

I'm about to start cutting, staining, and finishing my wood for my flow hood. Normally for something like this I'd just stain and finish then cut cause I'm mostly finishing the wood to stop contaminants/mold growing on my hood and finishing one large sheet is a lot easier than 15 smaller pieces. If I stain first, it means the cut edges wont be finished and thus open to mold growth. Does anyone think this would be an issue?

Would it be better to cut or stain first?

I'd finish the whole sheet, cut, then re-finish the edges.

I've found varying responses in my searches so I'll ask here. With tubs that had nasty green in them do you guys think hosing them out, letting them dry, and then vigorously wiping down the inside with 70% iso is sufficient before loading them again? I've heard Kizzle say before that alcohol just smears spores around more than it actually kills them. Not sure how true that is. Is there any benefit to washing them out with soap and water beyond what I'm already doing?

Damn that sounds intense compared to what I’m used to. Is there a specific morphology you look for in “non competitive colonies?” I assume you’d be looking for uniform growth but I’ve been wrong plenty times before. Thanks for sharing your experience dude I’m definitely gonna get some spores from these oysters and add em to my agar rotation next week.:rasta:

Hahaha. Thanks man, I'll do exactly that. Looks like I was a little too successful in keeping everything dry.. I guess I was a little paranoid about being too wet, since that seems to be the typical issue.

Spores are not as much of an issue, they're everywhere anyways. I still soak my tubs in bleach tho, but the most important thing is to really scrub all the living cultures out of the tub.

So I reached out to FP about a HEPA filter I'm getting. It's a 36"x24". I was asking for a graph of resistance at different values, but instead they said "The recommended CFM for the 36x24 HEPA filter is 896. This is the minimum requirement for proper filtration."

Does that mean it doesn't actually achieve the rated 99.99% at 3 microns filtration unless flow out of the hepa is 896 cfm? Or does it mean it has to be at least 896 CFM pushing from behind the filter, which will then exit the filter at a lower CFM due to the resistance?

They like to pair their filters and blowers. I feel like they don't let you know very much other than, those two work together. I bought my pairing from them, 12 x 24. I find out now my blower could have handled a 24x24. I asked them for dimensions they prefer used, just the depth was what I was asking them about, never got answer. If anybody knows though? I went 17"

Yeah I don't even need to know the specs cause I know my blower will work. It's a 1TDU2 (which is what they'd recommend except they sell it with no stickers for like $100 more). But still I just wanted to know how much more powerful my blower was gonna be based off the specs of the filter. Only for curiosities sake really. But then they said that for proper filtration and it kind confused me

They didn't change anything on mine. It came in a Dayton box with 1TDU2 all over it. Now I just gotta get me 24x24 filter without wife knowing

Can someone tell me what's going on here? I've taken a picture of two types of mycelium growth, one of which I'm familiar with - the fuzzy type that grows on the outside of your cakes when birthing or re-emerging from dunks but recently with this leucistic strain I have been finding abnormal thick growth of this yellow tanish fungus I can only guess is some type of sclerotia. Now I did let these cakes colonize in their jars for about two months or more because there were certain spots in the jar that we're not yet colonized. Around the second month I was noticing no change in the uncolonized spot but a new growth formation was taking over the jar which was yellow tanish and was secreting lots of piss.

Only reason I went with FP was cause they could get it here the fastest and I was tired of spending so much time looking for deals on ebay. I found one place that priced a 24x36 for $278 before shipping which wasn't awful for a brand new hepa of the quality they provide. But it had a 4 week lead time so I bit the bullet to get one here faster.

I am curious though about what they meant about needing 896 CFM for proper filtration.
