Definitely don't need as many police. We do need police though. I doubt the majority of people would risk their life stopping an armed robbery let alone petty theft. I wouldn't.

lol yeah I have several unfortunate experiences that have proven to me that the police don't prevent crime - though they did find my stolen car after it turned up abandoned and smashed up across the street from a hospital so there's that? Education, mental health care, career development, etc., is what prevent crimes. Not police presence. Fill the hood with education and opportunities not cops. Fill poor rural white areas with all that good stuff too. Hillary Clinton actually had a plan to do just that for both urban and rural areas that are economically struggling, but no one seemed to care to hear it from her .

We do need people to actually enforce the laws and I feel like 'disband the police force' is more political posturing rather than effective change. I mean, I do think we should reform the fuck out of them in a lot of different ways. I get why some people are latching onto a more radical idea to tackle what is ultimately a festering cultural wound that has transcended generation after generation..I don't necessarily agree with it, I'm glad no one is actually really campaigning on it(cough joebiden cough) during what is an incredibly critical election year, but sweeping reform that is nothing short of a cultural revolution is needed to fix this issue.

Camden NJ is a good example of police reform.
This is one of the cities where you saw the police put down their gear and march with the people last week.

Quote:

-In 2004, 2005, and 2009, Camden was ranked America's "most dangerous city"
-In 2012, the FBI announced Camden was ranked first in violent crime per capita of cities with over 50,000 residents.
-By 2019, homicides had declined to 25, a 63% decrease. This coincided with wide-ranging reforms by the new police department

In 2012 the entire city police department was laid off and required to apply for a position with the new county police department. The application process included a 50-page form, psychological testing, and an interview process. Many employees were angry. Then-chief Scott Thomson saw it as a way to "hit the reset button" and completely change how policing worked in Camden; he characterized the city force at the time as "apathetic, lethargic and corrupt". He envisioned transforming how Camden officers saw themselves from "Warrior" to "Guardian."

"After the implementations, both complaints of excessive force and violent crimes decreased. In 2019 Bloomberg reported that excessive force complaints had dropped by 95%. In 2020 CNN reported the violent crime rate had dropped by 42%."

That's amazing. I had to commute through Camden for a little while. Bad things happen in Camden. People's heads get chopped off with machetes. If they can do it everyone else can too!

I would. I would love to be a cop, just not in the current state of the force. I don't want to arrest people for drugs and victimless crimes, cover-up for bad apples, and support a corrupt violent organization. I want to help and give back to the community in a positive way, not a racist and violent way.

^^^ This.

Defunding the police doesn't mean ending the police force. Only morons and Faux News watchers think that is what it means.

It just means that you start spending some of that cop money on other social systems like education and healthcare.

Camden is not the only city that has done this to great success.

When you look at the numbers in most large cities, they spend far more on police than they do on education. This is a problem that needs to be addressed.

4.2 billion dollars of my state's gas tax revenue were diverted to the state police. We have some of the oldest and most unsafe bridges and roads in the country. And the highest gas tax in the country. If I had a dollar for every time I popped a tire on a fucking pothole in the last 6 years I would have like almost 5 dollars. Fucking infuriates me. I don't even care about the roads anymore, I can dodge potholes with the best of them, but that is money that can go to more worthwhile things than shiny new toys for the cops.

they got rid of my local police force, the Ontario Provincial Police moved in and I thought everything was going to get worse, but I have never been hassled yet, they did stop my stepdad for not wearing a seatbelt, they must have been peering into every car to even notice something like that, in short I dont think it matters if you get rid of local cops or not, evrything will be the same, it wont effect me at all, I kinda liked the idea of city police vs state police, but they are the same shit

Yep that sounds like the way to do it. If many don't want to bother reapplying then great, they probably suck anyway.

I don't think you need to defund or disband the police to end the drug war.

You just have to end the drug war...

Police are, first and foremost, law enforcement. If you don't have a law against it they can't enforce it.

And while police rarely prevent crime police do stop crime that is already happening. Some of the worst areas I've ever been to are places where if you're being raped or assaulted and manage to dial 911 the police will show up after an hour... if at all.

But I've seen them put a stop to alot of these things too. Along with bar fights and robberies and vandalism.

If you ask me that's the primary part of protect and serve.

I personally like that if I'm being stalked I can dial the police and give them my location and they'll show up when I get dragged into an alley. Hopefully show up before I get mugged, beaten, and raped but in most places there's a good chance they'll show up before I get my throat slit.

Or can at least possibly save me after that part.

if they are projecting that they cant fund the police through the depression than this whole movement has political trojan horse written all over it

or just evil ppl who want to create a power vacuum

need way less crazy police tho, they seem to be the majority

i would go crazy tho as a cop jk

they need to let cops get high

tho there are a lot of cops on here that claim to get high

still gunna burn it down

in retrospect, why the fuck did I listen to that in full -- knew going in it was going to be a bad time

Sure you can end the drug war without doing that, but then you still have the bad cops from before. I like the "disband, re-form, and make them reapply" idea.

I've had to call 911 twice in one day because no one came. I waited 6 hours and called the police department directly before they told me to try again :okay:

:thefuckisthis:
called the suicide hotline on one occasion, mistakenly told them I had access to a gun
RCMP showed up at my door in like 10 minutes or less
never drew their weapons, but threatened to jail me if not proceeding to the hospital for an emergency mental health assessment
which ended up being a lie, they never bothered to check with the hospital about me going in

did get me directed into community mental health services and counselling tho
so props to them for recognizing a non-violent situation, de-escalating it, and directing me to the appropriate services rather than arresting me
