anyone ever try filling up 32oz jars with BRF to the top?
    #26730807 - 06/09/20 08:53 AM (3 years, 7 months ago)

For a while now I have been colonizing BRF only to be shredded into bulk.  Two things I discovered are 1) there is more mycellium in a colonized BRF jar than a colonized oat jar and 2) it is much easier to mix evenly with coir, verm, or whatever else you're using.

I have heard that BRF, like coir, is a bit more resistant to pathogens than whole oats... but since it is only steamed and not PC'd I am a little skeptical.  I already know it would be impossible to do a good job birthing from a 32oz jar, I would just spoon it out after heating the spoon (I love using a spoon for almost everything than the disposable scalpels I was using)... but is there a high chance for a BRF-filled 32oz jar to be contaminated before the whole thing colonizes?

It will stall. You could probably still top fruit and make it work. But not efficiently.

I tried with half filled jars. They never colonized the entire thing, but they did produce fruit

I’m curious why you say BRF is easier to mix into bulk evenly? I’ve never tried it myself admittedly but every time I’ve seen it I see big and small clumps and it doesn’t look very nice. With WBS you’re getting 3,000 inoculation points spread evenly throughout with a few kneading motions.

Probably cause most people seem to take a cheese grater to them.

haha yup!  That's what I use and that is the reason it is easier to mix.

I heard someone was mixing the pf tek recipe a little wet into shallow pucks in jars to use for liquid innoculant. I imagine it would break up really nice in water with one of those shaker bottle things. It's on my list to try!

Agar to grain to bulk will always be superior to brf. Though I have went Barf to bulk a few times.

yeah but the whole point of LI imo is so you can put it in a syringe, hence you don't have to go in front of a flow hood or SAB... just shoot it into a SHIP top.

I believe most growers just pour their LI into grain jars, aspirating LI into syringes first then injecting would be extra steps that aren't necessary. Imo LI is very useful for inoculating 5-10 jars with just one culture and having them finish colonizing reasonably fast. As a way of expanding a single working culture to be able to inoculate more grain jars and have them finish faster. This would also mean that making LI also counts as an extra step compared to inoculating directly with an agar culture. SHIPS work, LI's work, pouring LI works, it's about finding a method that works for you!
