Do Substrate Jars need to be re-moistened?
    #26730154 - 06/08/20 10:17 PM (3 years, 7 months ago)

so I just Inoculated My substrate jars 4 days ago. When I checked on them they seem to be a little dry there is still a fair amount of condensation on the sides of the jars but some of the vermiculite is shining through and there is a few crumbly pieces on the bottom.
I know that there is a high risk of contamination at this stage, so Im wondering if anyone has had to water their substrate and did it end up contaminated? Does anyone know the safest way to re-moisten if needed and if I use distilled or sterilized water? Also anything I can use to retain moisture in the jars? The substrate came pre-sterilized so I dont know how much water was actually used or how moist it was inside the jar when I received them.

I assume you are talking about pf trek BRF jars, but not sure.
If they are pf jars ,  you rehydrate them after birthing them.
If you are talking about grain, then no.you don’t worry about
Rehydrating them, just mix them with substrate at proper field
Capacity.

They are grain jars with peanut meal nutrient. If they are too dry for the incubation period will they even colonize at all? Do you know how long I should wait before attempting to re-hydrate if they do not show signs of mycel growth?

Once you inoculate the jars... Don't mess with them.  Adding water at this stage, Sterilized or not, is just asking for contamination.
