Sounds like they were hot when you inoculated, or they were not properly sterilized and are riddled with bacteria instead... could be too dry, or your syringe(assuming a syringe) wasnt shaken before use, or maybe just a dud... a picture would help tremendously: tell me Sooo much more

You can try again sure, but if they're too dry or too wet itll just flop again... post a picture

Might be growing in the middle and not visible from outside, did you inoculate close to the glass? Point being, need more info

They were steam sterilized for 2 hours then let cool overnight in the pot with the lid still on, so should have been sterile and definitely cool enough. Syringe was shaken and needle was at the glass. That's why I'm thinking too dry is the only possibility left?
