Need insight on panic attacks while sober
    #26729390 - 06/08/20 04:58 PM (3 years, 8 months ago)

TBH and short, I abused LSD/mushrooms/phenibut/kratom. I dont take anything besides phenibut and kratom now, havnt taken anything else for a month and lowering my intake with the phen/kratom. I had a serious panic attack coming down from LSD, maby its bc I didnt take my normal hours phenibut dose a long with taking psychedelic too often. Im not sure. Ive been having them while sober now. They went away for like 5 days, then I had one and now im having them again.

Im going to go to the Dr soon. Can someone please explain how you feel during these? They are scary sometimes. Sometimes I cant shake them, and it feels like im going to have a seizure/impending doom, like others have said.

Thanks for the comment. I was starting to have one of my episodes when I wrote this. My issue is I cant have any substances in my system for another 3 months, I normally just smoke weed and stuff... being 100% sober is my issue, and thats how I even got here to begin with. I took CBD and it came up on a test, even the hemp CBD..

Im lowering my dose on the phenibut, the kratom isnt the issue for me atleast. I cant believe how shit the WD is. Even just dosing a little below my normal dose can cause me issues. Im convinced that my first panic attack is a big reason why its so easy for me to have them so easily. I had a panic attack many years ago, and was prone to them after that for awhile.

I’ve had some pretty bad panic attacks from weed alone, panicking so badly I literally had to run from my environment because I was so scared and didn’t know what to do.

I had a handful of really bad ones when mixing weed with alcohol. I was convinced I was dying and would’ve called the paramedics every time if I didn’t learn how to calm myself down from a friend.

Even after I quit weed, they persisted for a couple of months, just more infrequently. Eventually they disappeared (for the most part. Quitting alcohol and lowering my caffeine intake helped as well). Exercise helped me tremendously as well.

It’s a rough road ahead but I think your best bet is to quit everything for a while and let yourself heal. That’s easier said than done but, from my experience, it’s the only way.

Panic attacks are one of the worst things a human can experience, no doubt. Not just the sensation, but the overall layering effect of gas-lighting yourself and feeling like you are crazy for having one. I feel you.

I really really appreciate you guys. Thank you for the kind words, and suggestions. These attacks get so bad, that I keep thinking Im going to have a seizure. My mind is calm, but I start feeling like im losing some sensation in my arm. If it gets really bad, my neck will start to get tight, my chest will hurt, and I feel like Im going to convulse, but I never do. Ive read others have similar experiences.

Im going to read this in the future, and appreciate life. The other night I had one for like 2.5 hours, middle of the night walking around my neighborhood bc it felt worse at my house. Im going to look into what you suggested, I take gabapentin when it gets really bad as well. What a mess. Again, thank you for your time guys and much love.

Breathing. Breath in, hold and count to four. Breath out, wait and count to four. Repeat.

I had these, too. Partly from a terrifying mushroom trip, partly from deep shadow work I was also doing at the time. It’s all about learning to regulate breathing, meditation. These are bandages though, until you get psychotherapy to talk through what happened and integrate these experiences into yourself and your worldview.

The wisdom and insight you will have gained on the other end of this will have been hard earned. Take heart. Will be okay. But certain things have to be done, and it’s okay to seek help.

I am going to walk you around the block conceptually, pls. let me know if it connects in some way.

the main effect that I experience with all psychedelics including weed is trails, which is persistence of fragments of experiencing such that as you move or watch something moving, you are simultaneously aware of several positions in the trajectory through time.

you wave your hand and see a fan in in front of you made of several hands in the wave. or turn your head and see several impressions of the room arranged perhaps in a 360 degree view.

body sensation also layers up, some people collapse under gravity effects if they are in the least way leaning to one side. This is the same thing as trails but it is body sense (proprioceptive) rather than vision. I do not need to list any more examples as you are experienced.

when body sense builds up, if that sense includes gas or tension, you can forget that you are subject to trails and may panic due to the pressures that seem to be squishing your heart.
They are not really squishing your heart, you arms are not seizing up etc. all these exaggerated sensations are due to persistent sensation or slower fading of signals in the brain while stoned or emotional (emotional states have the same persistence issues).

looking at this generic cause, and sitting with it should help.

when I analyzed to determine what was causing my panic issues, I made the mistake of finding fault with some activities such as driving or carrying heavy objects. These triggers were minor sources of feeling trapped in a terrible kinetic energy prison. Eventually I realized I was being emotional and all the sensations were layering up like on acid even when not stoned, but somehow emotional.

One thing that did help me is doing pushups which gave me more confidence of upper body resilience, but the main thing was in knowing that the body sensation layering is an illusion of the mind, and If I can relax and see that the actual sensation of the moment is not problematic the illusion fades, and the panic goes with it.

Sorry I didnt check shroomery until now. That was well written, thank you for that. I TOTALLY understand what you are saying. My primary issue is health/death anxiety. I never had this until aemi recently, but now it can get pretty bad, bad enough where I can start to feel pain in my chest. I then think “ok I have this death anxiety, and its probably causing these pains, but what if something actually is wrong with me.”

I had a really long, 2.5 hour long panic attacka few days ago where I was walking around my neighborhood late night because 1. I couldnt sit still, it made it much worse. 2. It felt worse being in my house. I was getting pains in my arms/neck/head/chest. All the spots that I have trouble dealing with.

They will go away for days at a time, and then out of nowhere I feel like im going to go into convulsions. It sounds crazy, I know. During these attacks, I have a moderate case of HPPD from the psychedelic abuse, it will look like im somewhat tripping and it makes it harder to calm down. I try to just breath it out, count, think of my loved ones. It has a lot to do with my phenibut abuse, probably 75%. I know the WD CAN cause seizures, which worries me. Alas, I like the way you think and what you wrote. It really paints a good picture of what youre describing/saying. I really wish we knew what happeneds when we die.

sure you wish you knew, it is an area that is trumped up by charlatans, soothsayers, and religious promoters. the whole business of life after death represents a huge chunk of our economy, but it is mostly creepy lazy people taking advantage of vulnerable individuals or preparing them for deep attacks into their bank accounts etc.

at this point you have it tangled up with your other anxieties and you have some difficulty focusing.

while you are on this earth take care of your molecules and they will take care of you.

I get these randomly without anything to do with any type of drug. Though, like most of us have had it happen during a period of being under the influence of something. But the whole feeling like you can't breathe, and then you think about not being able to breathe and then it just gets terrible.

Its like a mushroom trip - I just tell myself I'm fine and nothing is wrong. Not sure why I get them the way i do. Mostly very random. It does suck when they hit though.

exactly - after a few rounds in the loop, your emotions have triggered the same degree of serotonin that would have been released under the 5ht receptor activation from mushrooms.

this will amplify sensation and retrigger the loop, while the individual seeks sanctuary throughout the rotation.

I have noticed that looping is a natural process which facilitates finding something that may have been hidden nearby.
Instinctively, a tired dog approaches his mat and circles a few times around it until finding the right feeling to drop and rest.

Don't worry about looping, spread your awareness out and let yourself rest at the least awkward point.

Vibe, yours sound like genuine panic attacks. Have you ever felt like youre going to pass out/have a seizure/impending doom? Mine dont involve severe trouble breathing really, or racing thoughts. Its genuine pain in my chest, can spread to different areas. I rub my chest and it usually goes away for a little bit.

I read panic attacks don’t usually last for 2.5 hours (my longest one.) I literally felt like I was about to have a stroke or something. I feel dumb saying all this, im not some whacko, its really taken me aback.

Hey OP, sorry to hear about what you're going through. Panic attacks are rough, I've had one or two non-drug-induced ones in the past and it's the worst. Feels like you're completely losing hold of everything, going insane, going to die, etc. Panicking on psychs is somehow not as bad because at least then you know you're on something and it'll pass.

I relate a fair amount to your situation. I've had times when I absolutely had to go out and walk around for a couple hours, even in the middle of the night or in the rain (or both) because of unshakable, churning anxiety. I think seeing a doctor about generalised anxiety is a good move. You'll likely get prescribed something which will take the edge off, just be careful about trading one chemical dependency for another.

Re phenibut and kratom. Speaking from experience, those things will absolutely wreck you in the long term, and without a doubt are contributing to your problems. Some of my lowest lows were due to burning out from these two. If there is any way at all for you to wean off them, I'd implore you to put them aside and don't look back. I know it's tough when your baseline anxiety is holding you hostage, but there are other ways to manage it.

Maybe giving psychs a break for a while is a good idea as well if they're a trigger. Apart from the other good things advised in this thread, look into things that boost BDNF and enhance brain health in general. And the obligatory "eat well and exercise" advice applies as always.

I think you'll be fine in the long run, just focus on getting healthy and things will slowly improve. Wishing you a speedy recovery man
