A few questions before I innoculate
    #2672924 - 05/13/04 11:41 AM (13 years, 6 months ago)

It's been close to a month now that I have been visitng this site and collecting all the supplies I will need for my first cultivation attempt . I have learned alot here reading everyones post and all the wonderful teks . This weekend I'm going to innoculate my jars and I have a couple of questions .

I remember reading that the mycelium produces a little bit of heat during colonization , so keeping the incubator at 86 degrees , will this result in the cakes being a few degrees hotter ? And if so , should I keep the inc temp a little lower than 86 ?

My second question is regarding casings . I originaly planned on doing all cakes , however now I would like to try half cakes and half casings . Casings need lower RH thancakes and I planned on using perlite for humidification . Would adding slightly less water to perlite result in less RH ? Does anyone else use perlite when casing ?

Thanks in advanced .

afoaf said that as far as your casing question goes, most people do not use perlite as the humidity the casing gives off itself coupled with you misting the sides of the rubbermaid is plenty.

The temperature in your incubator wont be exact anyway, so its not a big issue. Just get it up in the 85-ish area and you'll be fine.

keep the temp as close to 86 as possible for the fastest mycelia growth

Hello. Glad to see you've been researching. Set your fishtank heater at 82... It kept everything at a perfect 84, about 86 on the inside of the jar. For casings, I always created humidification using perlite... in fact, I kept some casings in the same fruiting chambers as most of the cakes. Good luck.

It produces heat during a bulk grow thats why you dont incubate during large spawns poo/straw ect good luck and just keep the optimal temp until you venture to bulk
