Fair enough - I just checked the seller that I purchased it from and the ebay account is no longer available

To be fair it seems that there are a lot less Presto available on Ebay.co.uk right now in general. I was not able to find a single 23qt one.

If that is the case then I think you should go with Hawkins (especially since the price was basically the same as 160 that you originally paid for Presto) - but I would rather let someone else comment  here to confirm.

Search for Hawkins in this forum - it has been discussed before; it's OK.

I think that the biggest two downsides of it vs Presto are:
* no pressure gauge - so you only know that it has reached 15PSI once it starts to rock/whistle
* due to the lack of pressure gauge it is difficult to dial in exact pressure for the duration of the full sterilisation cycle (e.g. with my Presto I have added some extra weight to the steam valve rocker and it sits between 15.5-16.0 psi with the chosen gas burner setting. I have a feeling that with Hawkins you can't do that reliably as you have no idea what the pressure actually is).

You're right. It looks like presto can be managed much easier and precised... I will try to find some info about hawkins here, than I will make a decision. I wish I could start my shroomy journey asap, but because of this !@#$ virus nothing is easy anymore. Hopefully it will change soon.

Thanks a lot for your help!

you can add a pressure gauge to any PC with a kit, something like this...

also have a look on FB marketplace, there's usually a few PC's on there but obviously depends how far the seller is

All answers above.  I have a presto23 and it cost £120 all in.  Beforhand I used a british brand that got up to 12 psi and just extended my cooking time.  If you can get a decent PC id leave the oats well alone and go for white millet, room 101 stuff.......

I've just ordered Presto 23qt for £200 all in. Expensive a bit, but I'm happy. I have to buy everything else except oats, which I've got 20kg bag

Anyone got a good UK supply of naphta or heptane?

I asked this last year on here but never got round to ordering any. Now there doesn't seem to be any suppliers on eBay anymore. And Amazon supplier is charging 50 postage.

Could I use lighter fluid is it naphta?

Or I've seen this stuff Primus Powerfuel. It contains heptane, pentane, and naphta in similar amounts would it work too or would the mixture of these cause problems?

Good man thanks very much, would never have thought of this but it stands to sense it's a solvent that needs to leave no residue cos it's for brakes. Sweet.
Think it was actually yourself advised me last time but I never got round to ordering any off eBay and now there's none for some reason!

I just got PDA off ebay

petri dishes are easier to see what's going on, wide flat area so you can spot contam easy, I had no parafilm and using micropore tape on them is a RPITA coz the tape will rip yer gloves to bits when yer trying to undo it in the SAB.

I've also used small jam jars (pain to see clearly and get a sample out of but work OK specially for no pour coz they survive the PC).

I've just started using these 50ml sauce tubs with lids because 100 of them are way cheaper than petri dishes! If you use these store them upside down once poured since they have a little nipple on the underside of the lid that encourages condensation to drip right into the middle where your sample is if you don't! (ask me how I know )

I found a cheap reagent bottle on ebay too, handy to put yer agar though the PC in, just leave the top loose and cover with tinfoil

Perfect
Imo buy 100s of the cheap ebay ones before buying expensive glass or pp5 petris, you gonna need alot of prctise to get it down right
Ultimately everyone goes on about using nopour tubs and shit but in the end everyone moves on to petris, so you may as well skip that step and get right and the petris.

I ordered a box of 500 petris for about 33 quid including shipping last year. Initial account creation seems a bit weird because this place predominantly sells to schools and other educational entities. However, t private buyers can do it as well: Here.

They also have packs of 20 for quite cheap.

Thank you guys! I ordered 36 of these ones: petri dishes
Quiet expensive, but they are glass, autoclavable, so I hope they will last much longer than plastic alternatives. Would you recommend to buy plastic ones as well (just to practice with them)? I'm trying to collect everything I need before I start.
Where can I get a small rack to place it in my SAB?
And what about spores? Ebay or sporeworks? How long will I have to wait for order from sporeworks?

While certainly less environmentally friendly than glass, pre-sterilised plastic (PP5) has some advantages like you don't need to worry about sterility - just put them in a SAB and pour.

With glass you need to either sterilise them first  and then pour or do pre-pour followed by sterilisation.

For example, where I live I get PP5 collected as part of recycling so I don't feel as bad about the environmental impact but without question good quality glass petris can serve for years and can be more sustainable.

However, there is another side of this carbon footprint debate - I'm pretty sure (just a speculation) that the initial energy investment required to produce e.g. 30 glass petris, is much higher than to produce 30 or more plastic plates so have to compare multiple aspects and also long term impact. Kind of like some reusable fabric shopping bags would have to be reused more than 500 times before they are better for environment than plastic bags; and that is almost physically impossible considering the manufacturing quality (or lack of).

How do!.

Recently back to the shroomery world and been buying up some bits, thought I would post a few bits I found.

Plastic petri dishes i found 100 for £10.79 (free next day delivery at £25 so build up your order with other bits  :

https://www.hope-education.co.uk/product/science/glassware,-plastics-and-ceramics/petri-dishes/petri-dishes-90mm-pack-100/he1674414

The best deal I found on agar powder was at my local asian store, 500g for £7.

Light malt extract I got from a local brew supply shop, £3.50 for 300g.

open google maps on your area and type 'home brew supplies' to find your nearest one.

Now on the lookout for the best deals on spawnbags and tyvek/filters....I think I will end up ordering a few to get me going but put in a big order from china.
