I put mine on before a pc cycle and it melted onto the threads... .

Does it serve a purpose and if so what?

Its a drip ring to prevent drips. Must be a cheap AF media bottle if it melted. I use cheap AF bottles and they dont melt.

Probably a fake media bottle. I've gotten cheap ones off Amazon that were off brand and just from feel you could tell they were cheap shit. I didn't put them in a pressure cooker

As Smartattack said, the rings are there to prevent the liquid from climbing around the lip of the bottle, to the outside, and spilling everywhere (you'll see this happen if you try to accurately pour water from a drinking glass). The ring acts as a site where the water can "break away" from the bottle, allowing you to accurately pour liquids.
Provided you have a standard size, you can purchase replacement "drip rings" pretty easily; google it. Type of plastic would be something to look into. Polypropylene would be a good choice.

I dunno man. My go to bottles are 3x for $16 @500ml. I've got a bunch now and have poured a ton of dishes and the caps haven't even degraded after a bunch of PC cycles. I would expect much more from a bottle that costs 6 times as much.
