Flow Hood question and General Introduction from long time lurker/hobbyist.
    #26726518 - 06/07/20 12:38 PM (3 years, 8 months ago)

Hello all.

After over 13 years of lurking and being an occasional mycological hobbyist, I decided to finally make an account and to interact with this lovely community. Anyways, I am thinking of making the leap to building a flow hood so that I can work with myco bags and more easily produce edible/medicinal mushrooms(shiitake blocks mainly). I've decided that I want a 24"x 24" filter/flow hood area, but am having a hard time actually finding a filter and/or the motor. If sourced from fungi perfecti, just the filter and blower alone end up being around $740 shipped, which I suspect is quite over priced. Are you all having to contact the manufacturers directly to purchase these filters/blower motors? It seems like I do not see many "click>add to cart>check out" type of purchase options online. Also, I have put hours into searching for a blower at this point and it seems like most are not quite powerful enough to get the >400 CFM required at approximately 1"-1.2" static pressure. When I do find a motor that is powerful enough, they have all ended up being quite a bit too powerful. It seems like I have exhausted the Dayton and Fasco models. I can't help but think I am missing something though, since there are so many flow hoods out there obviously working very well. Is there some obvious trick to reducing the blower flow besides stacking like 5 or more pre-filters lol?

Any help, problem solving, and/or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers and much gratitude to all on this website who have helped me unknowingly over the years!

Look on ebay, Its surprising how often deals come up. A few weeks a go I got 2 filters 18" x 4' that are $1200 each new for $350 total brand new. Also, I know most people use dayton style HVAC blowers for air supply but quality inline duct fans work very nicely as well. My hood uses 2 of them in parallel and gives the perfect flow for way less money than a single dayton. They are also friendly to speed controllers for fine tuning.

Awesome. I will keep an eye out on eBay and also look into the inline duct blowers. Thanks for the reply. I checked out the flow hood in your signature. That is a thing of beauty!
