Panaeolus foenisceii
    #26726510 - 06/07/20 12:35 PM (3 years, 7 months ago)

I have a ton of P. foenisceii growing in my yard right now. They sprouted up this morning after a torrential downpour last night. I have been reading about these mushrooms and am intrigued about their edibility and activity. Has anyone tried eating these mushrooms? Some report mild hallucinations at high dose, others report a calming effect around 3-4g. Gastric upset has been reported in some people. Early studies point to sporadic psilocybin production in some species, but nothing seems to be conclusive. I have no intention of eating these as they have a dark brown spore print but am just curious about what is growing in my yard. What is your take on this species?

Found this on Wikipedia-

Quote:

Panaeolus foenisecii, commonly called the mower's mushroom, haymaker or brown hay mushroom, is a very common and widely distributed little brown mushroom often found on lawns. In 1963 Tyler and Smith found that this mushroom contains serotonin, 5-HTP and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid.[2] In many field guides it is erroneously listed as psychoactive, however the mushroom does not produce any hallucinogenic effects.[3]

It is sometimes mistaken for the psychedelic Panaeolus cinctulus or Panaeolus olivaceus both of which share the same habitat and can be differentiated by their jet black spores. This is probably why Panaeolus foenisecii is occasionally listed as a psychoactive species in older literature.
