Let's get locked up.

My son-in-law he's not exactly legally perfect just became a prison guard. He's industrious, but not too long ago he was a borderline illegal Mexican. What's worse is he even likes it. One of the prisoners he oversees got released the other day and he was the first person the guy came to thank. He thought my son-in-law was real deal guy and said he was. My son-in-law felt really good about that. He follows rules there but he tends to feel empathy for the people he imprisons. He's pretty aware its just the grace of God that separates them. Can a person with empathy continue on this path? I have friend who was a prison guard for 10 years and couldn't take it anymore. It must be said some people need to be locked up and I've been locked up myself for short periods of time and I probably needed it. To me this is a pretty philosophical question because how can you continue down this path and stay mentally healthy? Does anyone see the conflicts in this like I do? Of course I'm not going to say anything discouraging because he supports my daughter.

i feel like the fact that someone came and thanked him is proof enough, i guess on a philosophical level that “he is where he needs to be.” i think people forget that nothing is set in stone and when the time comes- be it 10 years from now where he realizes it’s not for him anymore, he should be able to remove himself from that situation. my parents have been in and out of prison and took the path afterwards to go back into the prisons to reach out to other people while they’re in there. i know that the prison system in some places is pretty corrupt but ultimately in a place like that where you’re stripped of your freedom and what not, isn’t it comforting to have light during a time like that? i think if you’re able to show him your support, he’ll do a great job.

A tough path that’s laden with difficulties for sure. I think certain personality types can manage it and still retain their humanity & a sense of common decency for all parties involved. I’ve known 2 guards and a prison warden, only one didn’t handle it well from what I could tell.

Lot LOT fewer people need to be locked up than are. It's a pretty fucked system, but if you get a win and feel good making it a little better in your own way then more power to you.

I agree....getting locked up in some areas is actually an industry...fortunately here on the border it is government run...not private industry prisons which are exempt from governmental standards. It is a bit more selective...but still drug crimes are the majority. Non violent offenders are the easiest to manage. Cops don't like violent offenders...they might get hurt...

I think people with any amount of compassion are severely needed in the prison system, so I give thanks for him and those like him. Hopefully he can handle it, or gets out before becoming jaded.

I think to stay sane, or at least consistent towards this end, one must feel like they are making a difference with the empathy. Individuals who thank him are going a long way towards that goal. If the employer supports it that goes far too. No man is an island as they say.

That's true...he will retire well if he sticks with it. I had a chance to be a federal prison guard while living in poverty...I chose more poverty. Hell I was already too much of a hard ass then and knew it would make me worse. Now I administer government networks...more friendly to my mind.
