Hey guys,

I'm very new to this business and would like to request some help to identify some mushrooms growing in my front yard.
From what I can gather, I think my mushrooms are Psilocybe subaeruginosa, however I would obviously like this verified prior to using them!
The mushrooms are growing in a tan bark covered garden bed on a slope, and are well protected from the sun, and receive a fair amount of moisture.
I have picked a couple of them to perform a spore print. The spores are a purple / brown color. I also noticed a small amount of blueing around the edges of the cap, and along the stem, however it wasn't as much as I thought I would get from a psychedelic mushroom.
If these are indeed the correct mushroom, when would you suggest is the best time to pick these?
Cheers,
Big Fella

Welcome to the Shroomery. You have subaeruginosa indeed, and a marvelous patch at that. Those are ready to be picked, but leave the pins, (small ones with cobweb like strands covering the gills). You should notice more bluing once they are out of the ground.,
Also take more photos before you remove them!

God has smiled upon you!!!!! Yes. now is the time to pick the ones whose cap is fully flat on the edges or starting to curve upwards. See a few of them are already black and rotted as well, those could've been picked weeks ago. Leave the small ones that cap hasn't unfolded yet until they reach the size of the biggest ones that aren't rotten.
My god, in your own front yard! So lucky!!! Use scissors to cut all the mushrooms where they come out from the ground leaving all the wood chips in place and undisturbed so you have free psychedelic mushrooms every fall that you live there!

G'day OOISI & Typerwritemonky,
Thanks very much for your responses and tips on my mushrooms.
I thought I'd come back online and share some pics of my first haul which I picked this morning. I only picked about half of what was growing in my garden bed. The rest is probably still too immature so I'll plan on picking them in the next week or so.

As you can see, some of the mushrooms caps are a little black in areas. I'm assuming this is due to the severe frosts we have had here over the last 2 or 3 days. I'm not sure if I'll keep those mushrooms or not.
Anyway, thanks again!
Cheers,
Big Fella

Hey bigfella Thanks so much for sharing, I have been doing my own research into Yarra Valley MM’s and came across your post. Appreciate this is quite old now, but wanted to check and see how this is going? I’m also from the area and interested in what’s been located about. Have you heard of many more stories of this? I didn’t think it was an area known to have MM but this is exciting. Cheers, Teddy
