Horse feed instead of soy hulls for Master's Mix?
    #26724044 - 06/06/20 12:20 PM (3 years, 7 months ago)

So I picked up a bag of the Tractor Supply 12% Horse Feed pellets on the advice of someone on a comment I can't find online now.

It was the closets thing in my area to soy hulls or wheat middlings. Now I've seen the detailed ingredients I'm wondering if some of those things could retard mycellium growth.

Also wondering if i wold se it at 15% or 60% as with bran or soy hulls?

"This product is pelleted. Here is a list of ingredients.
Wheat Middlings, Oat Hulls, Ground Soybean Hulls, Rice Bran, Cane Molasses, Calcium Carbonate, Salt, Copper Sulfate, Vitamin A Supplement, Zinc Oxide, Calcium Iodate, Magnesium Oxide, Cobalt Carbonate, Ferrous Carbonate, Sodium Selenite, Manganous Oxide."

I don't know what that will do. But in my opinion, I think you would be better off with bran and a little chicken manure if you can't find soy hulls. To find soy hulls you will have to call around. It took me a few days to find them. But I am glad I spent the time to find them. It does not say where you are located. But try southern states if you have one near you or call other feed stores.

You have to call in or ask in person you will not find it on their web site.

Careful with the water in the recipe. All brands of fuel pellets have different water content. All other weights are in LBS.

My local Southern States only has soy meal, I asked if they knew anywhere else and they had no idea.

I'm in Asheville, NC. Nowhere seems to have soy hulls or wheat middlings.

Not keen on paying shipping for 40lb bags of anyting.

I am in bristol Va which is about 1 1/2 hours from you worst case scenario drive to bristol and pick up enough to make it worth your while. I would email the owner of the southern states near you and ask him if he can get it I am sure he can get it or actually has it on hand. Employees don't really care if they sell it or not. If he does not have it start calling all the southern states heading towards bristol Va you will find it sooner or later.

Sounds like the Paris farmer's unions around here, sometimes you gotta go to like 4 of 'em before one finally has what you want...

Horse feed works. Mine contains: barley alfalfa wheat bran corn and other additives such as selenium manganese ... salt is definitely not what a mushroom wants, but the amount is too small to harm (mine contains 0.25%). I use a maximum of 15-20% of it in the substrate.

Chicken feed works too.

There are definitely no soy hulls in my area. I am also organic. So I had to try what is available.

I saw it had all the things that people use so I grabbed it, it came recommended too.

Next question, what is the gypsum for and is it necessary for Lion's Mane on sawdust? There seems to be a lot of disagreement about gypsum these days.

I never noticed a difference whether I used it or not, but I never ran side by side tests and weighed yields and all that

Gypsum is one of those take it or leave it things I have it so I use it. As Forrester said I never noticed a difference if I forget to put it in.

Yes. many opinions about gypsum. I use it.
I THINK that gypsum buffers the ph value. That doesn't mean change, it just keeps it stable ... Maybe if bacteria ... I would be very interested in a "scientific" explanation.

As the two guys say ... I never noticed a difference either.
