Mold or new mycelium?
    #26723931 - 06/06/20 11:38 AM (3 years, 7 months ago)

I harvested the first flush from this shoebox a few days ago and this has been growing since about yesterday. I assumed it was the mycelium preparing to refruit on top of the stumps, but the color makes me a bit wary. It's a bluish green that's a bit too green for my liking, but then again it seems odd to me that mold could grow directly on mycelial tissue.
What do you guys think?

Mold can grow on mycelium and is more likely on stumps. These things are more likely after the first flush or if there were problems with your spawn or growing conditions. That looks contaminated to me.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, after giving it another look just now, it was definitely mold. I opened and emptied the box in a garbage bag outside and threw the bag in the dumpster, then left the box soaking in a bleach and water solution and sprayed my closet with disinfectant.

Is there something I might have done wrong, or something I can do to prevent it next time? I followed this tek: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26043820
Other than this issue I think it went well. It took about three weeks to mature after spawning and I got almost 300 grams fresh from a liter of spawn, which according to the tek is about what's expected. I don't know where I might have screwed up. Or is it just bad luck?
