Cons of Plastic Jars?
    #2672383 - 05/13/04 07:27 AM (13 years, 5 months ago)

Whats are the negative effects of using plastic 1/2 pint jars over glass? Is it still possible to steam sterilise plastic jars or do they melt? Also doesn't plastic "breathe"? If so would this increase the risk of contams?

Thanks

I wouldnt PC plastic....steam may be ok....

I dont think plastic breathes...at least not jar plastic...

You wont be able to see contams...or when its done...unless the plastic is clear....

Seems a little to ghetto to me...If your gonna make cakes....shell out a few bucks to get 12 glass jars..

the plastic is clear but not very thick... I have 10 plastic and 10 glass jars... but I stumbled upon the glass in a store in the middle of the country and they only had 11... I live in the UK and we have no walmart and the correct glass jars are hard to find

Plastic works fine   You just have to make sure that its a strong, industrial plastic.  Myco Supply sells plastic 1/2 jars and they are autoclavable (you can pressure cook them).  They are translucent and many folks use them.

I'm not quite sure if I understand how glass or plastic "breathe" ?

But many, many people use plastic and their crops turn out the same as if they were to use glass.

the heat might cause plastic to deform or even melt. I tried that once, it was empty too, just wanted to test it out, I put it in boiling water and in 15 seconds it deformed horribily

I will have to test my plastic jars out tonite to see if they deform...

Another thing I have been wondering about... suppose I have 500ml jars (1 pint), would I have to use double the normal substrate and fill it right to the top or could I fill them halfway up and leave the rest as air? I'm thinking 1 Pint jars would probably be a bad idea whichever way I do it but just making sure.

Whats wrong with pints? First flush post dunk results were an average of 65.4 wet grams per cake for my pint cakes and 41 grams per half pint cake. Other than their size they were made, incubated and birthed identically.

Granted, its not 2:1, but theres an element of time saving as well. It would be much easier, IMHO, to handle a dozen pints than two dozen half pints.

Plastic is ok for steaming normally, some can be pressure cooked too.
The thing i find when usin plastic is it is better to heat them up to the right temp slowly, and let them cool slowly when there done, this help save some of the warping you can get from fast heats, or fast cools.

Did you actually read her post?
Lots of people use plastic,as long as its the right kind, and it works great.

The main reason people use 1/2pints instead of pints is because of colonization time.Pints will work fine, but they will take twice as long as 1/2 pints too fully colonize>With pints your looking at 3-5 weeks average depending on incubation temps, where as 1/2 pints can finish in 10-14 days.

I'm pretty sure Lana's jars have the #5 symble. There safe to PC.

plastic containers that chinnese food comes
in, the microwaverbal lones, they steam well
and hold up to pressure cooking too.

understood, but it would still be wise to test one out empty first and if its all good, go ahead with the rest and fill them. I still prefer glass myself and its easily available
