3 visits to a VERY public park in Melbourne City. Old, unsprayed woodchips.
Only habitat pics from here:

Found lookalikes (shown on the right) amongst the same patch, always check when you get home!

Heading out of the city for a hike post-lockdown turned into a suprise forage.

Following the massive rains we headed a few hours out of the city for one of the best days out with the mushroom that ive ever had! ~61g dried

All cleaned up and ready for drying. Trying a new method using cloths and the central heating vents.

The biggest stem of the lot was fascinating. Hollow with a membrane like a vein up the middle.

And finally a few P. Alutacea on dung:

Thanks for reading! Happy hunting

breezy677 said: I'm new to hunting, so please excuse my ignorance, but what happened? Would it have been the sunny/warm days over the weekend? When should I try looking again for more? I was loaded up with paper bags ready for a haul and did not find one sub... so bizarre
Where I check is weather dependant. If it's been overcast for a week or more and raining enough then I find subs in way more exposed (meaning less shady) areas and don't have to look so closely amongst bushes, tall grass, ect. When it's been sunny I look closely I look in much damper and shadier areas.
The densest clusters I've ever found have been in a swampy area or beside a pond. When checking these areas, I walk right up to the water then work my way back looking for subs. Eventually I find where the conditions are perfect for subs considering how the weather has been and I find them. And when I find subs I lift the tall grass or move the bushes to the side and often find a lot more.
Can hunt every day of the season (if the whole state of Victoria is your hunting ground). Just check areas with the right conditions for how the weather has been.............
Since many have been out hunting, you'll likely have to use your imagination more and check areas where others haven't been. For finding subs at this time I think really public areas (beside the highway, for example) or the opposite (really hard to get to places where people likely wouldn't go because it's hard to get to, for example) should be really good.
Regular areas (so to speak) where most people go like entire parks within an hour from the city and the entrance to forest where's there's the carpark and that have more than likely been hunted through. For me, checking these parks as well as the main entrances to forests where most of the forest-goers go to is like a waste of time because when I go out I ideally like to find a lottts of subs..........
Where should be really good is now is in the forest, just make sure you enter the forest at a spot no one else has entered and hunted through.................

so many wonderful subs at the moment - really great photos everyone. I played around with scanning a dried specimen and I'm pretty stoked with how it came out. Thinking about making some prints...
Going to go foraging this afternoon to get some fresh ones to scan.

Have a nice day !

Went for another walk this morning, they are still out and about, although looking a bit old and tired

I know there's still some out there because I left plenty of pins there even with this weather ><
I also found a huge fly amanita complete with fly on top:

I’ve taking into account nearly everything you’ve stated and have never found bigger subs in my life. You’re a legend mate. Cheers to the long weekend.

Not a massive haul and not a great time to yield ratio, but after around 4 hours of hunting found these, most in just one spot.
Do subs love being by the water? These grew on mulch that was a half meter away from a very boggy ditch. Thoughts?

Currently back at the usual haunt in Gippsland for the long weekend. Oh boy! a lot of peak season shenanigans happening today... Was real frosty and foggy this morning;
  ~ From the garden;
              Sub on the left, deadlies on the right;
 ~ Was a little worried when I didn't see any activity earlier in the season. But happy that my favourite patch is fruiting again;
                ~ Second largest sub I've ever found;
  I have large hands btw.. ~ Some manky ones that had stems worth keeping;
  ~ found these along the way to the first new major patch that I found this season;
                        ~ Still some action at that patch & found and even juicer one nearby;
                             ~ Some Amanitas;
  Gymnopilus Sp;
 ~ I should of brought down more than two chambers for the dehydrator as I ran out of room;
 set the fresher ones aside to be dried tomorrow;

Just the one wee fella from tonight's outing My local patch has slowed down considerably on account of the lack of consistent wet weather, but still producing nonetheless

Damn, here I was happy I finally found some decent patches.
what do they look like to you? and is it because of the lack of the blue bruising you think they aren't subs?

For future reference, this isn’t the place to be asking for ID’s. But since you’re new here I’ll let it slide..
You have a few different types there. I can see; Stropharia Sp., Hypholoma Sp., Marasmius oreades. Though there’s a couple of other species mixed in there. But no subs..
Keep hunting & welcome to the shroomery.

I appreciate the feedback, it's been a while since I went hunting for subs and I think I've gotten rusty.
I will keep hunting and post an ID thread next time to make sure they are proper subs.
Thanks for the help, I was pretty certain they were subs yikes.

Amazing finds guys!!
Basically zero rain down here in Hobart until today and only about 3mm but frosts forecast for a few days this week
Hopefully it's enough moisture to get them fruiting again as I'm finding new spots but all the subs are pretty tatty with no small ones

If you have a small regular patch, it doesn't hurt to water it. I went out at night to my local park last year and threw on a few buckets of water, I got some monster subs late on.
The weather in Melbourne is a killer this week.

After the wettest start to a year in ages we have this high pressure system right over us. Beautiful days and cold nights but no moisture :-(
