1st time WBS Spawn, some are SPLIT/CRACKED OPEN!

Hello yall so I'm trying WBS spawn for the first time and I started my jars yesterday. I simmered them and I had the heat up a tad too high and all looked good but I opened the lid about 20 minutes in and the simmer went up to a light boil (not a rolling boil). They couldnt have been boiling that long cus I checked them a few minutes before but I noticed a few had split open when I was straining them. So, I wasn't too worried but then I moved to the PC part of the TEK and let them sit overnight and they look like they had a little too much heat/moisture in the PC cus there a little more popped and mushy looking. I'm about to make some more jars and I'm gonna add a little less water on the bottom AND make sure my PC pressure doesn't get too high.
I'm wondering: 1) Is the spawn before the PC part look OK to use? 2) Should I add less water in the PC? (I had around 2" of water covering the bottom of the jars) 3) Could too high of pressure/PCing too long cause them to pop like that?
Sorry for the long post I spent a lot of time and research on this and I dont wanna fk it up. Thanks in advance for anyone with input on this field

And heres a pic of a jar I just packed of the leftover spawn (LEFT) next to one of the ones already PCd (RIGHT)

Does the bird seed shake freely or is it clumpy? I wouldn’t risk running with insufficient water for the PC cycle and you want to maintain 15psi for a minimum 90 minutes. Dial your heat back to maintain 15psi without constant venting.

Looks like you are a little over hydrated. Should still be fine though.

I guess it depends on if you have alternate jars to do it again and sufficient inoculant to make an experiment of the first. At least you know what needs adjusting in your process.

That’s the reason I don’t simmer WBS. I normally rinse wbs until it’s clean then soak for 24 hrs. It comes out perfectly every time with this method. U just have to wait 24 hrs lol if you don’t want to wait then give them a hot water bath for a hr. Heat up some water to 200 degrees then pour it on top of the grain inside a pot. Leave it for a hr then strain for a bit and load jars

im starting some more jars tonight and this time im gonna do that and not soak in boiling water for the first part. whats the whole point in soaking them in boiling water at first anyways? i imagine to speed up the hydration? ALsO, i read a lot about people adding gypsum and coffe and shit to their water. does this make much a difference? and if so what other stuff would be good to add to the mix? this is my first time with wbs so really any pointers other than that are MUCH appreciated. thanks yall so much yall the best!

@lumpynuzz I second Soaking for wbs.
With regards to additives, get out of the mindset of "adding nutrition", grain is plenty dense with nutrients already. HOWEVER I do add a sprinkle of gypsum, as it does help with both clumping, PH buffering, and trace elements. but just a sprinkle, and only after the draining step.

Definitely soaked too long. All I’ve ever used is wbs and I quit using hot water too.
Soak them in a bucket for 16-20 hours then spread them out like your pic for 2-3 hours. Then mix them up to get the outer dry ones mixed in then load them up.
They’ll still be pretty wet.
The ones you have will work but probably slower than normal. If you’re not in a rush I’d shake them a couple times a day for 2-3 days then use them.
