After a two yields can I renourish?
    #26720412 - 06/04/20 10:03 PM (3 years, 7 months ago)

I was thinking after two yields would I be able to breakdown my cakes again into a new bulk substrate? So I can reuse the same mycelium.

If I'm understanding you correctly, you're asking if you could break up cakes into tubs after two successful flushes? I've never done it, but I would imagine that the myc may not be strong enough to recover and colonize the new sub all over again and then push out more fruits after going through 2 flushes. It might, but you'd be better off just leaving them as cakes for a potential 3rd flush.

The problem isn't renourisment, it's the build-up of waste from the digestion process of the mycelium. Even though they don't have stomachs, They do kind of shit in some type of way.  I believe this voice substrates dumped outside and to regular natural dirt with microbes and all that, keep producing mushrooms, because there's got to be some type of bacteria that feeds on those toxins

Most of your nutrients come from the grains. Just rehydrate after your second flush. Whether its dunking, bottom watering, or a heavy misting. Reusing flushed cakes to spawn bulk sounds like contam city. You can try it though. I'm kinda curious.

It can be done.. I did it as an experiment. I had 2 spent grow bags that I broke apart and put into a tub with organic manure compost from Lowes. They took off within 2 weeks.  I was able to get 2 1/2 oz dried from this experiment. Would of definitely gotten a lot more out of it if I had pasteurized the compost. It starting getting little gnats which im certain were already present in the compost as larvae. When I tossed it out I was a little upset to see a 10" mushroom that had grown entirely on the bottom of the tub. I had to toss it because it had started to rot from excess moisture.

Come to think of it I may be wrong. Fairy circles get larger every year for some reason

Just stage new projects for continuous growth. Don't try to continue the first one for too long. Eventually, each one ends up with diminishing returns, and usually contamination.

Maybe I can add some of the older cakes in some pasteurized grains and see what happens (kinda like agar). Just curious though, I enjoy the idea of spending more time with this little cakes before I mix them in my garden.

I did it once. I did it right after first flush my idea being the mycelium was still strong so I mixed it with more sub and it flushed again. I did this with to tubs one got mold. So thats a 50/50 rate of failure. Might as well try.

Grain needs to be sterilized not pasteurized. Personally, I like the idea of spending time of making brand new cakes that will flourish rather than waste time on cakes that are all but useless. But you do you. Grains have enough nutrients in them alone, so the addition of cakes in them wouldn't really add anything more that the myc could use.
