Alternate substrate materials?

Hello friends. Noob here, haven't harvested anything yet. My jars have gotten to about 75% success rate. I am using a WBS Mushboy TEK he probably doesn't even remember writing: "24 hr soak, drain, load jars slightly wet, PC two hours" and inoculating with spore syringe in a SAB.
My shoeboxes are at a 0% success rate. I start with pristine white myc and then they are getting infected with green mold, probably trich, even after aggressive, healthy-looking colonization. The fluffy white top turns a dark grey, looks super dead.
I have been unable to procure coco coir, for covid-19 reasons. Vermiculite + WBS is not working (the WBS sprouted!). Vermiculite + rice is not working. I think I have good air exchange. I may be over-watering; I am ashamed to say I still haven't got a kitchen scale, but I definitely have not exceeded the verm field capacity. My room is a little bit cool; the current box has been placed by a sunny window. Hoping this helps. Anyone else have other ideas?

I’m a little confused. Your using wbs as spawn and verm as a substrate when you say verm+wbs?

Can you find horse shit in your area? Do you not have access to Amazon?
Have you tried cakes?
I think you have some reading to do. There are plenty of great teks at your disposal. Pick one that fits your capacity, and follow it step by step.

I do not purchase from Amazon. Not willing to help Bezos become a trillionaire. Not keen on uploading photos of federal crimes, either.
I am using WBS in the jar (working well) and WBS + verm in the shoebox (not working)

well you could try growing a coconut tree, and shred the husk yourself
Amazon isn't the only website that stocks coir.

Petsmart sells coir. As far as the pics go, in this day and age, no cop shop cares about recreational shroom growing. They help people help you.

I don’t think the wbs should be germinating after the pressure cooker.
It sprouts all the time when I leave a little in the bucket or wherever but never seen it after cooking.

If you are having sprouted grains after a PC cycle then you aren't sterilizing right.

I have experimented a lot with WBS. I find a 12 hour soak and 24 hour sit n dry work best. Mine was sprouting too and I don't like that... that means there is dead plant material in the jar after PC'ing.

I did not PC the WBS / verm that I used as shoebox substrate. Is that my problem? I read on here that bulk substrates do not even need to be pasteurized. I thought the logic was that by the time a jar is fully colonized the mycelium is resilient enough to handle a few endospores or whatever. Of course I was reading that in reference to coir, not the junk I'm attempting.
And I post way too much radical socialist class warfare shit on FB and Reddit, I'm on plenty of watchlists, just don't like taking risks.

actually, that reminds me, my last shoebox got infected at one spot... There was myco-piss, so I let the entire substrate dry out for a day, and it took care of the problem and went back to normal... ended up with a decent yield this week.

I'm sure you're using plenty of products from China... they're ten times worse than Bezos.
And not PC'ing WBS is like a swimming pool with no water. Call it a day using WBS and steam some BRF.

Yes that’s definitely your problem. You shouldn’t even use WBS in a substrate that’s almost guaranteed to be the problem. Even if you sterilized it will still contaminate. Grains should be used only for spawn. And the only bulk substrate that doesn’t need to be pasteurized Is coir. If your not willing to order coir then find some horse/cow shit or straw and pasteurize it. Also pasteurization can be tricky until u get it down, just get some coir or do the PF Tek

Thanks so much for the advice, everyone. I should be able to get my hands on straw and uh "natural fertilizer" without too much trouble.
