This is my first time with grain, Using WBS. It started growing and then after about a week it just stopped growing. Any ideas as to what might be wrong?
Thanks

Please provide up close and clear images of the grain in your jars. From the distance I cannot discern a reason as to why. They look "fine" to me, but also could be bacterial but again. My perspective is too far away for me to tell.

I failed to think of that.

I've attached a closer pic of one of the jars, and also the lid.
For the lid I have a 1/4" hole drilled and then a square of Tyvek glued on both top and underside for air exchange.
A couple of specific questions- 1) How long does it normally take for a jar of WBS to colonize at room temperature. This is my first time with grain and I never found anything that said how long. 2) Is it advisable to shake the jars every now and then?
It just seemed odd that colonization in all the jars got going the first week and then didn't seem to progress week 2.

Have you considered shaking your jars? Seems like you're running off the BRF info and believe you need to allow the myc to fully envelope the grain - you don't. You can shake those jars and break up that myc to spread it. In some jars that have stalled on me a good shake usually picks them back up. Tyvek is okay to use and offers some good FAE, but you only need to use one layer - This goes for micropore tape as well the thicker your tape/tyvek is the less FAE you will have. I have not had ANY contamination with just one layer of micropore tape covering a couple holes on my lids which makes it pretty fool proof imo.
You can see here my lids are the simplest you can get and have never failed me. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the feedback, mushhead. I went ahead and gave the jars a shake. I think I will also poke through the tyvek with a sterile nail and tape over the hole with micropore tape that I do have on hand, just to make sure FAE isn't a problem. Could be that they aren't getting enough.
And just in case, I'm going to go ahead and start a second batch in case this one doesn't work out. The worst that would happen is that I'll end up with a lot of shrooms which is a good problem to have.

They dont need FAE. The need GE. Gas exchange. Some ppl use unmodified lids just back screwed a little. Idk if that's your issue. Your lids seem fine.
Are your grains hydrated properly?

Eh. I get those mixed up all the time. Same principle basically. His jars look in the pics to be fairly well hydrated as there is condensation build up. The grains also look swollen at capacity without dry spots. So I don't think hydration is an issue here.

Well, I shook the jars and let them be for a while. Lo and behold, it's growing.
Check it out.

It just seems to be taking awhile. This is after 4 weeks. Since this is my first time with grains, I didn't have any idea of how long it takes in the jars. I'm just tickled that everything looks to be okay. One thing I can do it wait.
