Stoned Thoughts, from Trendal

Did you ever see that movie, The Abyss? The part with the "fluerocarbons"? It was a thick pink transparent liquid that could be super-oxygenated and then used to breath with instead of air. The hero uses a suit full of it to dive far below the level where pressure would crush his lungs. Fluerocarbons are real, and are used in some medical applications where it is better to breathe liquid than air. So, I think, how cool would it be to get a swimming pool filled up with this stuff? Then get high and set up a lawn chair down on the bottom and just sit there. Breathing the liquid. I think it'd be cool. Then again, I smoke pot

Heres another thought...you're stoned I once saw a news show about that stuff. They had a glass full of it and took a mouse by the tail with some hemos and held him under the surface. He appeared to be drowning at first then he started breathing the liquid. It would be cool to swim around breathing like that. No gravity to hold ya down.

The ability of liquid perfluorochemicals (PFCs) to support "liquid breathing" was first demonstrated in the early 1960's by immersing a mouse in a glass beaker filled with an oxygenated PFC. Although it was completely submerged in the liquid, the mouse was able to breathe, which proved that the PFC was able to facilitate the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide. All of the current human liquid ventilation studies are being conducted using perflubron (LiquiVent?), a PFC with a high solubility for oxygen and carbon dioxide.

I was watching a show on premature births where a baby was born wasy early and his lungs were not fully developed and the more he breathed (well the more the ventilator forced air into him) the more damaged his lungs became from not being fully developed and not ready to breath air/oxygen mixture. So they filled his lungs up and saved him.

I'm pretty sure I saw that same show. It was on PBS. It made sense because a fetus' lungs aren't exposed to air until birth, so this seemed like a really good idea! PS: I also like the idea of talking your dog for a walk in an underwater park, but we'll need to make some subtle design changes to the frisbee... <-- There's a very small mouse in there, but you can't see him, because he's also wearing a Japanese Invisibility Cloak (See Science Forum).
