MUSHROOMS HARD TO IDENTIFY. I NEED SOMEONE WITH MORE EXPERIENCE IDENTIFYING
    #26715649 - 06/03/20 01:53 AM (3 years, 8 months ago)

SOMEONE HELP PLEASE. I NEED AN EXPERT OVER HERE...OR SOMEONE WHO KINDA KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE DOING. THESE MUSHROOMS ARE TRICKY

Habitat:
Where does it grow? I’m in Kentucky, Louisville to be exact it’s transitioning from spring to summer here. It had been really rainy, wet and humid. Although the ground was becoming pretty dry when I found these and I was suprised they were still alive. It was about 75-80 degrees Fahrenheit at the time and the humidity was at around 50%. The temperatures have been from the lower 60s to almost 90 so it’s been fluctuating extensively and causing lots of mushroom growth  I found them growing in clusters in a horse field under a fallen tree and tall weeds that was providing them with enough shade to grow. I’m not sure exactly what kind of tree it’s really dead but from whats left it looks like a maple or oak. Not growing directly from poo but really close to poo. Very well could have been growing from a decomposed poo pattie.

Gills:
The gills are slightly crowded and are a lighter grayish/purple color in young specimens but turn to a dark purple/black with maturity. The medium sized "teenage" mushrooms clearly show mottled gills , while the older ones show it faintly but still visible and the younger ones little to none at all.

Stem:
The stems are a pale yellow to white, very faint to no bruising, they appear to be hollow. The length ranges from around 4cm to the longest being around 1-2 inches. stems are very thin There is no “nut” attaching stem to cap that I can see but I haven’t dissected them yet.

Cap: The caps are a very pale yellow to cream color with a darker colored center that ranges from a light rusty color to a darker reddish brown. There is a darker bluish/grayish ring on the outer part of the cap which Is hard to see in the photos but showed up more as the mushrooms got older. The size varies from around 3cm to 12cm diameter. The shape ranges as well from conical to bell in some younger specimens Then as they age become more convex, umbonate to almost uplifted in very mature specimens. They are sticky and slimy when wet from a gel pellicle I presume. Some of the larger mushrooms have begun to split on the edges.

Spore print color: So here is why I’m having so much trouble identifying these myself. The spore print is very hard to obtain from these mushrooms. I set them out on black and white paper added droplets or water to the backs to moisten them up a bit covered them with a glass pan and left them alone for over 24 hours! I woke to find very faint spore prints only the mushrooms that seemed to be in the middle stages of maturity “teenage years” left nice dark spore prints and the colors ranged from a rich dark brownish blackish/ to a very dark purplish black and some are plain dark black. However when I was moistening the caps for spore print some of the shorter mushrooms we’re a lot darker on the cap from the taller ones above them and on the wet q-tip they appeared to be a very dark purple/black if that helps any.

Bruising:
The stems bruised very little if at all, it could have been darkened by handling. The caps did bruise slightly blue to a purplish color on the “teenage” mushrooms, older mushrooms were very darkened in some places but it could be age or fallen spores.

Other information: This mushroom smelled very nice and earthly when it was freshly picked then changed to a kind of spicy or burnt smell as they aged and dried.

The first set of pictures are after the spore print test and the second set is a few close up pics of spore color and a close up of view of these mushrooms when they are freshly picked.

https://www.mushroomexpert.com/psathyrella_candolleana.html

For future reference, please take in situ shots so we can see the mushroom in its own habitat.

Many species, particularly in genera like Psathyrella, Coprinellus and Coprinopsis are very fragile
and will in most cases get quite mangled and deteriorate quickly after they've been picked and handled, thus
being more difficult to determine as many of their vital and often minuscule features disappear.

Hello,
Thanks for such a quick response and YES I agree with what you are saying as that is what I believed it to be at first as well until I realized they have a gel pellicle, and are not at all fragile like other psathyrella species. When I found them I wasn't hunting and was unprepared to take them with me. I actually ended up wrapping a few in old candy wrappers I found in my purse and the rest I had to mush together in cellophane from a cig box. They were then put in my purse along with 1000 other things for at least an hour in the heat before getting home to start the spore print test and that in itself is hard for any smaller gilled mushroom to withstand. I dried most of them but kept a few fresh just to see what happens when they get older and believe it or not they are all still in one piece turning dark and very sticky though. These mushrooms are actually stronger than a lot of other mushrooms I have brought home. They could be some heavy duty Psathyrella's but that would be rare. As for the gel pellicle I havent heard of any Psathyrella species having this. I could very well be wrong if I am please correct me. thanks again

Hi, thanks for the response! Sorry about the nonexistent habitat pics, I didn't expect to have to seek expertise on this as I am usually pretty good at identifying. BTW...You are very much correct on that! Psathyrella species are extremely fragile and rarely make it home, which is why Im second guessing whether or not they are actually of this species. These mushrooms have been through h*** and back to be honest.. the day I found them they were put in old candy wrappers and cellophane then thrown in my purse for at least an hour maybe longer IN THE HEAT. They were all in the same condition I found them in when I got them out for spore prints aside from some minor cracks in caps that happens with any mushroom you throw into a purse with a hundred other items. LOL! I dried most of them but kept a few to see what happens as they age and start to decompose and they are still in one piece going on day 4 now. They are starting to turn darker now due to decomposition like any other mushroom but are not very damaged and they have been handled ALOT. Another thing that is throwing me off is the gel pellicle because I haven't heard of psathyrella having a gel pellicle. I am considering cultivating these just to get a better spore print and maybe even getting a microscope to test. My OCD isn't going to let me leave this one alone  ... I JUST HAVE TO KNOW..
Thanks Again
