On Sunday I stumbled on about 50+ subaeruginosa pins in a local semi-suburban park area... anyone able to please offer any sub/Victorian advice in terms of when these may be ready to pick? It's in the seediest area and going to have to pretend to be a jogger or something haha

Thanks.

Even when the mushrooms have been in the dehydrator for way longer than necessary, the stems still bend a fair bit when the mushroom is held by the cap. People have tried to make them not be able to bend at all without snapping, but this doesn't seem to happen.

Can't say I've found a dry mushroom to be have a rubbery feel. I can imagine it to still have some moisture in it. So it would likely be best to dry them for a bit longer.

I don't know about using rice as a moisture absorber... I've never used it before so I can't comment too much... I wouldn't be surprised at all if it went mouldy shortly after absorbing even a very small amount of moisture and then went on the spoil the mushrooms. I wouldn't risk it.

Like I said, whatever it is that I've dried in a food dehydrator, I always add extra desiccant for peace of mind. Me being me, I add a lot of extra desiccant to the airtight glass jar (I love my peace of mind....).

In 2017 I actually bought a few kilos of desiccant sachets online, I gave out a lot and kept a lot for myself. I even dried mushrooms by sealing them in a massive ziplock bag filled with many many desiccant sachets and it worked perfectly.

Don't be surprised if you loose one or two batches of mushrooms in your life through incorrect drying and sotring. It happens to a lot of people. Just make sure they smell fine when you venture to eat them and don't have that strong vinegary smell they get when they spoil.

Went for a walk, found and took a few lonely old ones that have seen better days, but the good news is that the rain seems to be making TONS of pins (that I left behind and I hope people let grow up before picking) Should be good this week!

having researched this, I concur with the above with some variations:

- I don't have a food dehydrator, so I put my shrooms on cardboard and stick them in the fan oven with the door open. Fan on, no heat or minimal heat. If you're patient, no heat is fine.

- I never grind mine as I feel it's disrespectful to the sacred plant :-) I talk to them and give thanks before I eat them. Nausea is only a problem on high doses or if I combine them with too much Syrian Rue.

- I put 20g each into a ziplock bag, then stuff them into a clean glass jar with the lid on. I throw in a few desiccant packs (silica gel) and put a layer of uncooked rice in the bottom of the jar for good measure.

- I keep mine in the socks and pants drawer. Dark & dry.

Some people go an extra step and buy a vacuum sealer, I'm not sure if it's worth the effort.

I picked 30g dry last year as a novice, it kept me going till summer this year and they were still strong & powerful. I buy a bit of LSD and have started growing/buying San Pedro to mix things up. I'm off the white powders for life, I think. Psychedelics are the best.

I've picked 120g dry so far this year so I guess I'll have plenty till next year. And now that I know a spot in the pine plantations to pick them I could have 1000g dry next year. So storage won't really be a problem :-)

How long do people think the Melbourne season will keep going for? The forecast originally was for 11 degrees and wet this weekend but the BOM have changed their mind & it looks pretty Autumnal for the next 7 days. I might have to get the pushbike out again and look around.

With mushroom hunting, I think the main thing is not to miss the season - especially the peak. Sounds obvious, but you'd be surprised how many people miss it and have to either take other psychedelics or wait 9 or so months for the next season. Checking every three days would probably do, but since I think it's better to be safe than sorry, I'd say check in two days, or even daily because you might find more mushrooms... It's entirely up to you.....

So, you wanna pick your musherios as discretely as possible, drawing as little attention as possible, especially from the police I take it..... This reminds me of the mission in GTA 5 when preparing to rob the jewellery store..... "There's two ways I see of doing this - we go in smart or we go in loud and dumb." 9:48 - 9:54:

For what you wanna do, I think, "going in smart" would go something like this:

Firstly, make a team. I think a team of three people is ideal (I think if there are two blokes and one female, that would be best. Feel free to ask my why). Purchase worker clothes... Enough for the three of you... pants, boots, a fluorescent shirt, fluorescent jumper, etc.. everything you need to look like a council worker plus Santa Clause style sacks. Have a good sleep the night before and head out early in the morning, but not too early (I find, very early in the morning, people are generally feeling quite refreshed after their sleep and good because they haven't had the stress of their day and are more chatty to strangers), so, I'd say, aim to arrive at the area around 8 or 9am. Then, go for it....... As calmly as possible go around taking handfuls of mushrooms and put them in the Santa Clause style sacks. If anyone asks 'what are you doing?', say you're removing weeds. If they then make reference to the mushrooms, just say they are weeds. I can't imagine them asking further questions, not on the spot at least. They'd be like, 'oh' then tell them 'have a lovely day' and they should be on their way. And so, in just thirty seconds to five minutes, you and your team should have plennnnnty of mushrooms in your sacks.

Done.

And with the "stem butts" of the mushrooms, you can use them to grow more mushrooms. So don't worry if you take heaps of mycelium with you... Would probably be good to take as much mycelium with you as possible in order to re-locate the patch if you think it could be in a better place.... Look up how to grow mushrooms from "stem butts"..... Like anything, get it right the first time....

Has anyone experienced one of their high-yielding patches not fruiting at all the next season? One of my most reliable patches from last season is yet to fruit at all this year, even though I can see colonized woodchips lying around. I'm also 99% sure that no one else knows the patch too so I doubt it's because someone else has beaten me to picking them. Could it be because I was too aggressive in harvesting the patch last season?

so the consensus to storing is once dried, airtight jar with desiccant taped to the lid? If they've just been sitting dried in an open container for a few days.. bad idea?

No not at all. Take them out and check how dry the stems are. If they don't snap, just dry them more. You won't have lost much potency in a few days.

Mould is your enemy, as long as they've been pretty dry they won't decay in a few days.

Hey all, beautiful pics coming through here. I've never got onto the season this early and its been amazing. I wanted to share pics from our outings mid - late May.

3 visits to a VERY public park in Melbourne City. Old, unsprayed woodchips.

Only habitat pics from here:

Found lookalikes (shown on the right) amongst the same patch, always check when you get home!

Heading out of the city for a hike post-lockdown turned into a suprise forage.

Following the massive rains we headed a few hours out of the city for one of the best days out with the mushroom that ive ever had! ~61g dried

All cleaned up and ready for drying. Trying a new method using cloths and the central heating vents.

The biggest stem of the lot was fascinating. Hollow with a membrane like a vein up the middle.

And finally a few P. Alutacea on dung:

Thanks for reading! Happy hunting

Hi all. After taking in all your advice on hunting in the burbs, I ended up finding several substantial patches last week on Friday amoungst woodchips (took away about 220g wet!! Thank you!) A lot of the patches comprised of mostly pins, so I left them and came back yesterday (day after some decent rain) to check up on them.

To my dismay, every single patch and pin had turned black and rotted, but looked otherwise untouched. I spent hours walking through the same area, and found ZERO subs and hardly any new non-actives (saw a lot of the same non-active patches but all dried up).

I'm new to hunting, so please excuse my ignorance, but what happened? Would it have been the sunny/warm days over the weekend? When should I try looking again for more? I was loaded up with paper bags ready for a haul and did not find one sub... so bizarre

Hey guys, i found a big batch of subs, but in this patch they were all much smaller and thinner stemmed than usual. All stems bruised blue and edge of caps has some blue, very wavy caps on them also. Just wondering if this happens often? The stems being so thin and the caps when matured not that large? I've attached two subs from two different patches, one has normal thickness stem (that i find anyway) and the other is the thin stem.

Subs come in many shapes and sizes (wavy caps, flat caps, conical caps, thick stems, thin stems), so its completely normal. They have different phenotypes

June happened. The cold & freezing rain are not our friends. Subs like moderate rainfall, cold crisp nights & warm-ish days. Wind dries them out, too much rain waterlogs them, cold days stop them fruiting. You can continue to find them, but some of my friends don't hunt after early-mid June.

It's winter now, the season started early so we have passed the peak. They are leaving for another year.

However - the weather is lovely for the next few days, so keep checking. I stumbled upon a small patch a minute's walk from work in somepne's front yard, there were still pins emerging. I'll check them daily, at this time of year it takes longer for pins to become adults and some don't make it in adverse weather.

I’d have to argue otherwise.

Went for a hunt today and found one of my biggest hauls ever. With only one major rainfall compared to days of rain recently and the number I found today id say we are properly in the peak of the action now. I found subs growing in places I never thought they would grow and their is still a lot of pins left out there.

Had a really fun day and didn’t even take many photos as some of my massive new spots were literally centimetres from one of the busiest bike paths I know.

Here’s the photos I did manage

I always intend to take more photos and get too caught up in trying to pick them all.

One line I've been sitting on in case I need it is something along the lines of "there's a bunch of mushrooms reported as poisonous to dogs around here, we're not sure which so we're just pulling what we see," you can do that with or without the "council worker" cover, if going as a pleb just say you saw it on facebook and don't want your dog to go and scoff any. Of course, the problem is that you might alarm people into just stomping on every old mushie they see.
