the red stuff could be lipstick mold, and the second case could be the early stages of wet spot. check out the contamination page for more info.

btw this belongs in the contamination forum, where you'll probably get better responses to your questions...

the "sesame roll" is probably normal. I experience this with WBS. It just does it, because it's wet and soft, and it all sticks together. You can add a pinch of Gypsum to the grains, to keep them from clumping.

Popcorn tends to emit this reddish color, no worries the mycelium should overtake it soon, many people report this same thing. And for your rye jars, you gotsta break up that ball... lightly bang the jar against your palm or a tire, something that will give, not cement or wood. Once broken you can mix and disperse it around.

It happens with yellow popcorn, but I don't think white popcorn does.

just let it sit, and while you wait, knock up some more jars. Sooner or later, it's bound to start back up again on its own. That's what's happening to one of my rye jars. Wasn't doing anything for the longest time, then slowly, myc started showing up.
