Raspberry Pi 4B 8GB Model Release * 1
    #26712057 - 06/01/20 06:15 PM (3 years, 9 months ago)

Just found out today that a new model of the Raspberry Pi 4B is out, and it comes with a whopping 8GB of memory. Cant believe how far embedded systems have come, and that for $75 you can get an 8GB quad-core SBC. Not even 3-4 years ago ultrabooks weren't even this powerful, and double to triple the price.

blog post from raspberry pi for those interested

There was a discussion of this release on HN with the biggest criticism being it's use sd cards for OS and data. While true, I still think it's a great release and an awesome tool for diy makers.

I love embedded platforms, but as far a desktop replacement, I wish my phone (which has more memory and a better cpu than the rpi) would take on that job. I've always wanted to walk up to a beautiful screen, dock my phone, auth and then have my desktop just there with all my data staying with me. One can dream!

Thanks for the HN link will take a look. I definitely dont think a raspberry pi is a suitable replacement for a desktop, or laptop if one has access to those kinds of devices financially speaking. However for people on a tight budget, or those in developing countries I can easily see this new release becoming a staple. The SD cards for OS and data is a bit frustrating, but thankfully the RPi 4 can use a usb 3.0 external drive, so I just use an SD card for the OS and an external drive for data. You can get some more expensive SD cards that are pretty fast though which is nice.

Indeed. An M.2 slot would be great. Based on all the feedback, I suspect that'll be addressed in the next release.

It is truly moronic. Similar to the Arduino the form factor became their main feature and now they can't get away from their design mistakes.

Regarding the SD card issue I think it wouldn't be awful if they made it easy to have a read only SD card which immediately handed over to a USB device. Another nuisance is that the USB hub isn't able to supply enough power for a typical platter harddrive so you will need to power it (or inject power via another USB port).

Basically to make the raspberry pi a viable computer you need to add a bunch of peripherals, which its competitors don't need often.

Still it's amazing piece of tech, and their role is more to introducing an audience to computers everywhere. Most people will move to another platform after working out the ins and outs of their system.

What blows my mind is the SoC's coming out of China that run an OS (well a bearbones Linux/uClinux/busybox) for less than $2!

@PTreeDish: Yea it would be amazing. For now I'm content with the USB 3.0 interface and using an external SSD drive, but having M.2 slot for the boot drive would be fucking amazing.

@singlet_oxygen: To be fair I don't think either raspberry pi or arduino expected to blow up the way it did, and as such naturally have shortcomings they didnt expect would become problematic start to become problematic. But as you said ,still ana amazing piece of tech.

What kind of SoC from China have you tried?

I was mostly thinking of the F1C100s chips from Allwinner, ARM9 @ 533MHz, video decoding at fullspeed at 720 (h.264, mpeg 30fps), USB otg, SD/SPI interface (plus UART, TWI, LCD).

There are also some Lichee boards sporting it like the Nano and Lichee Pi Zero.

I've made use of a few Lichee Nano you can buy them <$4 a piece via aliexpress, (SD, LCD, supports WIFI extension usually 1-2$ for the board).

My favorite SBC using the F1C100s is George Hillard's "business card" https://www.thirtythreeforty.net/posts/2019/12/my-business-card-runs-linux/

The FC100's look super cool. It would be really cool to have like a hundred of those and do some cluster computing. That business card looks fucking awesome thanks for the share. Might have to try something like that.

Cool! I never heard about F1C100s chips before. It's awesome that they are so cheap. I should order a couple. The business card looks cool.

I'm a sucker for anything I can put linux on. I have an orange pi board that works pretty well, it's running Armbian linux with pi hole and I have set it up as the DNS server for my network so that it blocks ads.
