straw or wood pellets for oyster buckets?
    #26711946 - 06/01/20 05:28 PM (3 years, 7 months ago)

hello every one. i have been reading around and it seems af ir there is no consensus on this topic. is straw unsupplemented) better for oysters or hardwood pellets(unsupplemented). i would also like to ask if using a lot of grain spawn makes up for not supplementing fruiting blocks? lastly, ive read that 5 gal buckets are not ideal because of core temp getting too high during fruiting. what are your thoughts?

If you're fruiting from blocks indoors then supplemented sawdust or fuel pellets is the way to go, you don't get much from straight sawdust. Sawdust is great for expanding into outdoor beds though.

I've never tried the high spawn ratio as a replacement for amendments so

Never heard of the internal core temp thing, buckets work fine. Straw yields more when chopped and when pasteurized with lime. It all depends on if you're indoor fruiting on shelves or logs versus beds.

You can't supplement with buckets, you supplement with bags, they need to be sterilized. I wasn't recommending buckets I was just answering your question. If you're growing inside and want a decent yield you'll need to use master's mix or some other supplementation like bran. Low temp fruiting will help as well with certain varieties like kings.

People do use buckets indoors though, along with poly tubing. Spent Coffee grounds are decent for oysters if you have a budget and somebody in the community willing to part with their waste.

Thanks for answering. When you say you dont get much from straight sawdust, do you mean BE is better with straight straw or same as sawdust? Right now i do not have the option of straw or supplemented sawdust!

I was comparing supplemented sawdust to un-supplemented sawdust, and untreated/un-chopped straw to treated/chopped straw.
I would wager a higher BE with lime treated straw over straight sawdust though.

Use what's available to you obviously but I don't see how it's possible for you to have access to sterile grain spawn and not have access  to supplementation.

If you don't have bran or soybean hulls, pellets, or meal availableb you could always just make flour from your dry grain and supplement your bags with that. You could add more spawn as you previously mentioned but I'd personally rather just make flour, it doesn't sound like you'll be running that many bags to make it much of a hassle.

Edit* after re-reading this thread I'm pretty confused about what you're actually asking and what it is that you intend to do. Maybe you're saying that you only have the option of growing in buckets with either straw or sawdust? If this is the case use straw, I'd be surprised if sawdust in buckets would even work, I highly doubt it.

OH! My fruiting chamber is a greenhouse in my garage. Straw is too messy and too far for me. I dont have the space to manage it. Ive seen a farm doing buckets of unsupplemented sawdust. And ive seen a video of a man growing oyster in 50lbs logs (polytubing) of unsupplemented sawdust. Sawdust is available close by and is not messy. I will be using buckets because it is better in terms of space management and i do not need to build a shelf for it ill just stack them up (i can fit 100 in my greenhouse). But now im worried since u are suggesting sawdust might not work in buckets.

It just seems like an odd  choice, I mean if you've seen others do it with success then I guess you already know it can work. I wouldn't want to fuck with 100 buckets of sawdust that's for sure but to each their own. Sawdust logs seem equally tedious to me, fuck that shit. I recommend fruiting from supplemented blocks. You'll harvest more for your effort and what you're suggesting sounds like a massive pain in the balls.

You are on the right track.

Just use fuel pellets.

With enough grain spawn, you don't even need to pasteurize them.

But, a foolproof way is to just add fuel pellets to a bag, add boiling water, put in a bin with a towel over to cool, and it will be pasteurized.

This method is so much easier than trying to deal with sterilizing supplemented blocks if you don't have the equipment its not even funny.
