Coco coir
    #26711510 - 06/01/20 01:16 PM (3 years, 8 months ago)

Hello. This is my first time growing any kind of mushrooms. Half month ago I inoculated my jars with mckennaii and now jars are almost fully colonized. Because this is my first time doing this I'm not sure in my coco coir (could be contaminated) and ruin my grow. I definitely cannot pasteurize it becouse I can't accurately regulate temperature, and I don't want to kill good bacteria too. So I wonder could I just spray my coco coir with hidrogen peroxide 3%... Should it be good enough to kill bad bacteria and fungus spores?

Did you look over at this TEK

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24077162

Very easy to do and you don't need to check your temps, just your field capacity.

Coir only needs to be hydrated to field capacity but the more experienced cultivators found that mushrooms do better when you hydrate it with boiling water.

What brand of coir do you have? Spraying peroxide is not a good idea as I’ve only really seen it harm mycelium. Only in rare instances is it useful.

Coir can be used in any which way. Sterilized, pasteurized, hot or even cold water. The myc seems to go through it better with some form of heat treatment though. If you have verified trich added coir I’d just sterilize it.

You can also properly pasteurize with buckets - check out the Mudabucket. I’ve used that method for hpoo. Just wrapped my buckets in carpet padding to hold temp but anything insulating will work

I use the oven, one of those turkey trays, and a stick thermometer.

Be careful because ovens are usually precise but not necessarily accurate.

Thanks for link.
I'll try that method. It seams to be same as Gordo tek.

There is no brand (not brick, but shredded coco coir)
So you sterilize your coco coir? But that way you kill good bacteria too..?

What does the peroxide do to the good bacteria? Just pour boiling water on the coir in a bucket with a lid. 5x the weight of coir in grams and then let it cool.

Coir is very contam resistant stuff. You can grow on it just fine even without any good bacteria helping out.

I agree, It make sense.
I've plan to use 50/50 (500g+500g) coir, verm. How much water should I use in that case?

:whathesaid: seriously, coir doesn't get moldy at all. I have had mine doing good after 45days of spawning right now.

I dunno dude, check the bucket tek or then use 50/50 and check for field capacity. Verm doesn't absorb water like coir does.

That’s to much verm should be more like 70/30 coir/verm
You “pasteurize” coir, not sterilize.

I've had coir in a bucket for over a year. I just rehydrated it and it worked perfectly fine.
