King oyster shoebox

Ok so I’ve been growing actives for a little while and this is my first run with kings.
Dropped agar to a quart of wbs, then mixed that into a coir/hardwood pellet mixture.
This is about three days in
Does it look normal so far?? And right now I’ve got the fae restricted, should I open it up or let it consolidate for a while?
How long til pins normally??

Myc looks strange but could be cause it's on coir, I wouldn't worry yet.
I would probably let it consolidate more, then a cold shock always gets kings to pin. I think they usually NEED one but I can't remember for sure, it's been a while...

I have pretty much the same expermiment running at the moment! Was inspired by this post on reddit, and spawned to coir/verm mix 6 days ago, but I have some more jars of king oyster spawn and might give a coir/hardwood pellets mix a try.
After 6 days I my pretty cool closet, my boxes look just as yours on the surface, and some knobs have built up at the sides of the tub - i'll post a pic later if you like. So it looks like either both of us grow the same contam, or we're on the right track.
I've grown kings in sterillized bags once - here's my Grow Log, so I'm no pro, but remember they definitely need a cold shock and also seem to benefit from some sort of casing. In my first experiment I tried with coir/verm and verm only and didn't notice a real difference. When I opened and cased the bags there was already a thick layer of mycelium mass on the surface, so for now I will wait at least one more week for the myc to further consolidate. I've also read that scratching this layer slightly with a fork before casing and the cold shock further promotes fruiting. Go check the link to a fruiting thread I mentioned i my grow log for more infos!
Good luck, man! Might the mushroom goddess be with us! Would be nice if we would keep this thread alive for some exchange!

Right on!
I’ll add a new pic soon, the myc is gettin thicker and climbing the walls now.
My plan at the moment is to give it another day or so to consolidate then put it in the fridge for two days. After that I’m going to put the shoebox inside dubbed sweater boxes with frozen water bottles or something in them.
I’m hoping the fridge will initiate pinning and the little dub chamber will stay cold enough to continue.
I gotta say I’m skeptical about scratching it though.
Here’s a pic of right now

Be careful with putting them in the fridge too long - not shure if that might be too cold. For where I'm living, I'll put them just outside over night.
Here's the growing condtions for king oysters:
Phase 1: Mycelium growth Temperature: 24°C Humidity: 90 - 95% Duration: 12 - 16 days CO2: 5,000 - 20,000 ppm Fresh air exchange: 1 per hour Light: n/a
Phase 2: Primordia formation / Fruiting initiation Temperature: 10 - 15°C Humidity: 95 - 100% Duration: 4 - 5 days CO2: <1,000 ppm Fresh air exchange: 4 - 8 per hour Light: 500 - 1,000 lux
Phase 3: Fruiting and harvest Temperature: 15 - 21°C Humidity: 85 - 90% Duration: 4 - 8 days CO2: <1,000 ppm Fresh air exchange: 4 - 5 per hour Light: 500 - 1,000 lux Cropping cycle: two crops, 14 days apart in 45 days

This link from your grow log was one of the best things I’ve found.
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/17268641/fpart/1/vc/1
Halfway through they start putting six to eight bags packed in a tub together then casing them together into one surface, and the fruits were higher quality and yield doubled on average.

The multi-block casing method is kinda cool, it makes all the bags act as a single substrate so you can get really huge mushrooms, although a lot fewer of them. I remember that thread from back then, I wish more of those folks still frequented here...

I also came across a few people saying they fruited in the 70s and 80s no problem which gives me hope.
Maybe I’ll leave it in the fridge for 5-6 hours at a time if it doesn’t start pinning on its own. I’m not sure but I think the fridge is probably 40ish.
The cool thing about casing them was they got two or three solid flushes instead of just one from an uncased bag. I was surprised at the difference.

Those Stamets' numbers are an ok guideline, but don't place too much faith in them... Overnight in the fridge is nothing to worry about, just do a whole night and you'll be fine. I wouldn't worry about 70's for fruiting either.

So here are my tubs - seems as if the small shoebox is already forming some pins (at least the little "side-blob" definitely has a mushrrom shape). What you see here are the surfaces of the substrate (the one frome the large tub was taken through the lid because I don't want to open it yet) and a closeup of the "side blobs" that began to form all over the small shoebox.
I'm thinking about casing the small box later today, with an extra coir/verm layer - what do you think?

Looking good
I know people sometimes case these and I don't think it hurts, but what's your reason?

Better surface conditions for fruiting? Prevent the surface from drying out? Avoid more side pinning? And to make it as maintainance-free as possible, because I often have to leave home for 48+ hrs...

Awesome man I’m about to case mine and give it air. I use grocery bags for liners with shoeboxes and never trimmed this one down which restricts ge enough to keep cubes in spawn run which I normal only do with PE.
Hopefully soon as I cut it off and jack the fae up I’ll get some pins too.
The myc seems to look totally different and way thicker in the middle where it’s wetter and has the least fae.

Seems like you could accomplish all that by just leaving the lid on, but I'm not arguing that you do so, they'll do great either way you choose

Hmmm... good point... but what about FAE then? I was thinking about putting the lid upside down, when I have to leave... and thus need a casing layer. (?)
Would you suggest to not case them and keep the lid closed instead? What's your take on achieving FAE then?

Kings are one species you don't have to worry too much about FAE. Most of the time when they are commercially grown, they restrict the FAE on purpose to get the smaller caps and massive stems.
Just depends on the stage they're at when you're leaving - you don't want NO air, but you can get by on very little. I'd probably do polyfill holes, cube-monotub style, but in your case since they're not already cut, a casing layer may be the safer choice. FAE isn't a worry like I said, but you do NOT want that thing to get dry at all when you're gone! So I don't wanna mess you up and tell you not to case it, and then it dries out...

Plus in that link I posted earlier later flushes were insanely better with casing.

So these are my two oyster tubs today. I just scratched the small one which shows thicker groth on the surface slightly with a fork and then cased it with a approx. 60%verm/40%coir mix and put it outside in the shed for the next two nights & days. We have around 10°C minimum at night and around 18-20°C during the day, so that should be ideal.
The large one will stay in the closet together with its latest friends I spawned yesterday and some reishi fellows...
