Recycling Perlite
    #26710624 - 06/01/20 06:14 AM (3 years, 7 months ago)

Okay, I have my BRF cakes now in a Water Tub, to see what more I can get out of them, in terms of fruiting. My two SGFCs have been sitting in my closet gathering dust. I have read many sources that say the Perlite in the SGFCs can be re-used, but I want to make sure I do this right and don't facilitate growth of all sorts of microorganisms. Just now, I took the smaller, 30 Qt SGFC, washed the cover, and ran the Perlite under the hot water in my bathtub, while sort of rigorously mixing it around with my hand, and I didn't stop until the Perlite looked white and stopped running dark, spore-laden water from the many holes. I didn't do the 70 Qt tub yet, but before I do, is there a procedure for this?

Is it all right to simply run water over 5 inches of Perlite while stirring it around with my hand, leave the cover off, wait for it to dry, and then put it in storage, say pouring it all into a big garbage bag? Or is it better to simply throw the Perlite out and cut my losses, then if and when I want to grow again, simply start with fresh Perlite? Is there another way to wash the Perlite? If I keep the Perlite and store it, should I perhaps wait for a hot day and put the uncovered SGFC's out in the sun so they can dry more quickly?

Sounds like you have it down to me. You can wash it wish dish soap aswell. Once it is completely dry just toss in a garbage back lined cardboard box.

Thanks, brother! I didn't think to use dish soap. I may opt to do that if I feel like its not getting clean enough with water alone.
