Does anyone else have trouble integrating their trips?
    #26709683 - 05/31/20 05:55 PM (3 years, 8 months ago)

I've recently been thinking a lot about this idea for an app that could help a lot of people out. Thing is, I don't know if a lot of people have the problem I think they do. I know I had the problem, at least a little bit.

As per the title, the problem is that of integration.

Do you guys care about integration? After your average trip, do you try to reflect and think about how your trip experience could help your daily lives? If you do care about integration, how do you go about, well, integrating currently? I searched for "integrate" on the sub and noticed quite a few posts asking about tips on integration and the replies consisted of things like meditation, journaling, talking to trusted friends, etc.

My hypothesis is that as the stigma around psychedelics is fading rather quickly now, more and more people will become interested in trying them out, having heard about their benefits. But we all know a psychedelic experience can be extremely heavy, full of meaning and wonder but hard to reason about after the fact. I want to build an app that could allow people (new and experienced) to better understand their trips, and—by extension—themselves.

Thing is, I don't know how prevalent this problem might be. Is it something you guys think about/care about a lot?

It’s a private & internal (though also external) matter for me.  It happens like anything else in life happens.  Like integrating the loss of a parent or a loved one, or adjusting to moving to the shock of a new country, language, and culture.  Dating a new person.  Having a kid.
Or like integrating an important dream that only has meaning to you.  Alot of it seems to happen both automatically, spontaneously even, naturally etc - other parts or times it seems to require a more in depth participation.
Much like how breathing can seem simultaneously automatic & Manuel at times.  I don’t have a set time line on how long it takes to integrate a trip.  They all are in some ways still integrating & also informing my “normal” life as well as any future trips and the future in general.

The saying “man is what he eats” also applies to his mental nourishment .
The Mind also feeds - but it feeds on external sensory impressions, on our experiences (psychedelic one’s too), and on the content of the store-house consciousness  & on our own memory.  Just like how external food becomes internal -  after being absorbed and digested - so to does external “food” become internal and maintains the sense of self (Mind/psychic/psychological-  or inner life).
Here is a relevant excerpt from another that elucidates this whole thing well.  It’s more or less true & how I see it as well.

*What cannot be absorbed by the system is discarded, and thus, in the body as well as in the mind, there is a constant process of grasping and rejecting, assimilating and dissimilating, identifying with oneself and alienating. When we look closely at this process of nutrition, physical and mental, we shall notice that it is not only the eater who consumes the food, but, in the course of assimilation, also the food devours the eater. There is thus mutual absorption between them. We know how much people can be changed (for better or worse) by ideas they have absorbed and which finally have absorbed and consumed them - Nyanaponika Thera. *

:justastonishing:

Thank you for this, something I needed to read especially the part about dreams (I had a particularly difficult and moving dream lately and it didn’t even occur to me that it’s part of the integration process).

OP, this is real sage advice.

I always spend some time reflecting on and thinking about the experience afterwards. If I don't, it can be easy to forget important things that I learned or experienced. Then later when I'm tripping again, I'll remember them and be like "why didn't I remember that the first time?" I take notes when I trip, and I read them back later when sober, and I reflect on both the visuals and the ideas and issues raised more broadly.

I don't know if there's any downside to not doing so other than forgetting, but for me spending time doing this helps me to make long lasting changes and to think about things differently in the long run.

It depends on the psychedelic though. With mushrooms, I'm often dismissive of the ideas that I had under the influence after I sober up. Whereas with LSD I'm often amazed at how good my ideas under the influence were, even after I'm sober. That's one of the reasons I love LSD so much.

I would not build such an app except as a demo for some future job.
unless your future job has something to do with trip integration, it might not be good in your portfolio (resume)

or build it anyway and let it look like something else as well using what you learn.  maybe dream integration, or conflict resolution.
