Contamination Identification on Fresh GT Mushrooms

Hi gang,

I am currently in the final stages of my first grow. I have GTs and everything has gone pretty well until now. I have 1 cake with fully mature mushrooms and one of them has a black-ish colored stalk.

I have a few questions:

1- I have attached the picture and was wondering if this is contamination / mold?

2- If this is mold / contamination then what should I do? Should I throw away the mushroom or the whole cake?

3- If the cap is OK (no visual contamination) then can I still get a spore print off of this shroom, considering of course that I would cut away the stalk and also trash it if it is contaminated.

Thanks in advance to everyone on this awesome forum!

Hey there bud, well those purple things under the cap are spores. This happens when the mushroom is mature and its actually the whole purpose of the fungi creating the fruiting body.

Hi there, thanks for the quick response, that was one of my thoughts, I thought it might be contamination or also maybe spores, the thing is the there were no other spores anywhere else around that mushroom. For example only the stalk and the veil were a black/blue-ish color, the perlite beneath it did not have any spores so I was wondering if it might be mold or contaminate.

Update: to be safe I went ahead and picked the mushroom as it was already time anyway. The mushroom had no real odor or smell to it and was moist but not really slimy or overly wet. I split apart the stalk slightly and did not see any discoloration.

Do you think I am OK and just freaking out?

Thanks!

www.conciouslibrary.com

Free pdf versions of cultivation books and life cycle information.

I suggest reading up on the lifecycle of mushrooms.

You tore the first mushroom apart for no reason at all.  Spores collect on and around the mushroom when the mushroom is mature.

Goodluck

Thank you so much, I am guilty of gutting the 1st mushroom but he will still be eaten, don't worry! LOL
