The north is pinning with some smaller, scattered fully developed specimens. However as of right now only 2 of my 10ish home patches are producing.

I guess what I'm saying is, depending on how far north you are, you may well be in the right spot but a week or two early. Or you may have missed the tiny inconspicuous pins by a few meters.

I'd head south if you're heading out tomorrow, or try again next weekend after the rains

Some big ones today.

I'm either getting my eye in, getting really lucky, or its a stellar year. Maybe a bit of all three perhaps. I am going to leave that spot alone now for a while, If someone else finds it i hope they respect it like I have tried to. Good luck with your hunts folks, the earth is giving us this medicine now when we need it most.

Found what looked like the perfect spot - grassy with ferns and old eucalypts along a southern slope, plenty of familiar fungi, and no signs of other hunters or really any traffic at all- but no subs. Hopefully I was just a bit early, I'll definitely head back sometime. I did at least find my first few P. alutacea, not enough for a trip but still fun to discover. Beautiful spot in any case. One weird kangaroo let me walk right up to it, might be blind or something and it looked a bit ragged, very unusual behaviour. At least it had a few friends with it.

macky - they should smell mushroomy not moldy. They're probably fine and your storage looks up to the job. Better than my first find where I did ha half-assed job of drying then put them in the freezer (they turned into black glop). I use a large container with damprid in it like so to draw out the last of the moisture but that's probably overkill if you use a dehydrator and do what works for other people. Just force of habit from when I used to fan dry everything.

Parti - I'd say it's more the first two but luck goes a long way when getting started, can't really get the hang of spotting them if there's none to spot.

Vines - brk nailed it. And as I said luck goes a long way when starting out. Once you've seen them it's easier to see more of them and know where to look with more confidence.

Interesting to see the rather average condition of some finds already, including the few I saw out. Apologies for the lack of pics but I still don't have a decent camera and my phone is a downgrade from last years with horrific results for photography. I'm hoping the next rains will bring the goods in my area but it does seem to be warmer this year.

Found 4 in the suburbs:

A small patch with 40 in a very small space.

Pic of the day!

Mostly dried specimens in a pine area:

I was like why bother today, a week without rain (now that i reflect that doesnt mean the hills got 0/next to 0 rain). So the day i thought would be the least productive ended up being the most productive.

Just feels so damn good to be taking photos of subs again! Didnt visit the porcini area, kinda wwondering if many people went despite the lack of rain.

My report from the south today is that it's still too dry.

The flush that happened never really got to it's full potential down there.

Got to see quite a few but not many had managed fill out.

There are heaps of pins and dehydrated shrooms out there though so this next boot of moisture and cold will well and truly bring them in.

Edit: @ frunco is the place where you found your porcini a popular spot?

Not very popular at all @OOISI. I found it while on large bike and marked it to come back later. It's pretty far off any main roads and I haven't seen a single person or car the 2/3 times I've went. I've never researched or looked for porcini but they were everywhere in this forest. Big ones too.

No subs on both my visits unfortunately. Maybe if I start looking got porcini I'll find subs instead.

Hey guys I have had some success by using the Atlas of living Australia to search for records on where subs have grown previously and was wondering if this was necessary, will they literally grow anywhere the conditions and habitat are correct even if that location isn't recorded in the ALA or should I just be sticking to spots near where they have been recorded?

No it isnt necessary. Looking for suitable habitats is key  and probably only a few instances are recorded on that database.

EDIT: Heres a photo of suitable habitat (no finds there).

I hit mid-southern pines on Fri and found only a small patch (six subs all up). It was slippery jacks and laccaria mostly, thousands of them. Found my first wood blewits though which have already been eaten. Delicious.

Still a little dry and not cold enough yet in the areas I checked out. Sorry for no photos at this stage.

After reading this thread I got about 10 on my 2nd day. I did walk a fair bit of main roads and looked very hard.

Keep on looking
