MUSHROOM HUNTER FINDS MONEY BAGS STUFFED IN STUMP Posted today at 6:58am by Jeff Lane
(Brookville, IN)--A Franklin County mushroom hunter got a lot more than he bargained for Thursday. Dan Johnson went hunting mushrooms in the woods near his Brookville home Thursday. He noticed a strange-looking tree stump. Inside that tree stump were numerous money bags. It turned out that the bags had been stolen from an armored car in northern Kentucky more than two and a half years ago. Thousands of dollars went missing. There’s no word yet on how the money bags ended up in the woods near Brookville.

If this happened to me, you would not be reading an article about it.

Is it legal to keep that much money you find without reporting it?
When you spend some of it at the local store, they will eventually deposit those bills at the bank. The bank scans the numbers of all big bills, and if the number comes up flagged (like, if it is part of a group of bills taken from a safe truck, or bank robbery) then the bank contacts the FBI with the name of the store who deposited it. The FBI review the footage of who has spent big bills there and investigates. Facial recognition software is incredible these days, and theirs is top notch.
It would only be a matter of time, unless you spent it all under the table or in places where your identity is truly a secret, and then youre cursing whoever you give the money to with a possible visit from the FBI...
According to Findlaw:
Quote:
Generally, if you find more than a few bucks, not doing the right thing could be criminal, after all cash is not likely to ever be "abandoned" property (which is usually completely legal to take). Though, as one Michigan man is learning, there may not be much police can do when a box full of cash falls off the back of your truck and goes blowing in the wind. Only about $7,000 of his $30,000 in cash has been recovered.
Cash Grab
Under several states' laws, if you find more than a certain amount of money, you are required to take it to the police if you can't identify the owner and return it yourself. The amount of money that requires you to do so varies by state. For example, in New York, it is $20, while in California it is $100. Typically, the laws will honor finder’s keepers. If after turning in cash or lost property to the police and the true owner cannot be found, after a period of time, the finder may become the keeper. In some places however, depending on the value of the item, there may be certain restrictions.
Finder or Stealer
While a finder of cash may think that no one will ever know they found what they found, when large sums of money, or important property, go missing, people tend to notice and look for them. Just ask those guys who found that prototype iPhone a few years back.
If you find lost property that is valuable or clearly not abandoned, keeping it could result in you facing theft charges. So like the rule of the playground requiring you to loudly announce finder's keepers, if you find lost property (including cash) in the real world, you need to let the authorities know, especially if you want to legally keep it.
https://blogs.findlaw.com/law_and_life/2019/05/do-you-have-to-return-found-money.html
People are resourceful though. I bet one of you guys would take it overseas and find a way.

If you're smart you realize you have a lifetime to spend it. Buy gas, give tips, buy a pizza - a thousand ways to commingle the found money in a way that doesn't tie you to it. Could probably safely disperse $2,000 to $3,000 per year that way without a single care or second thought. NEVER take a large sum to a bank if, as here, you find a cache of money.

Better yet, on something that won't end up in a bank until a couple more transactions down(if ever)...drugs.

So either the guy who hid it got caught, killed or couldn't find the stump. Pretty funny to imagine some guy heading out to the woods every few days to search in vain. Then he reads the paper one day. . .

you can bet your ass that if he would have spent any of that money, he would have received a late night visit from the local gestapo coming to accuse him of robbery

You could likely get hemmed up not reporting it, tied to a crime you did not commit, considering that eventually they may run the numbers and trace you down.
Edit: what Doc said.

Who says the serial numbers are known? Besides, spread out over a large geographic area randomly for a long time (years) will make it virtually impossible to trace. I'd do it. Smartly....patiently...but without too much concern. $20.00 here, $50.00 there...by the time any one bill sees a bank or is scanned (even if someone is looking, which I HIGHLY doubt) the cash will have been exchanged through ten other hands. No chain of evidence linking the original presenter of the bill(s).
I wouldn't keep it at home, though. If they came looking, they would find nothing. Then what? Are they going to prosecute you for MAYBE being the person who presented a single "stolen" $50.00 bill???
The world, and the number of people in it is vast. Be SMART about it, and you would have no problem, IMHO.

Don't understand estimate the feds when it comes to money stolen from them. With cameras on nearly every corner and every store today, it's not hard to track down someone.
I hope they don't release the guys name whom found it, the original liberators of the cash may decide that they want their money, one way or another.
