lol dat burrrrnnn
You could read the quote via a critique of the word 'useless'. If society renders a decent proportion of its citizens 'without useful livelihood', then you might argue that those people would have a stake in damaging the fabric of that society.
Anyway, this dude sounds like he might have missed the point.

Quote:
We divide human drives into three groups: (1) those drives that can be satisfied with minimal effort; (2) those that can be satisfied but only at the cost of serious effort; (3) those that cannot be adequately satisfied no matter how much effort one makes. The power process is the process of satisfying the drives of the second group.
The "useless" people are definitely putting serious effort into satisfying their inborn needs, if you have the rioters in mind.

This reminds me of the Mouse Paradise experiments from Calhoun. Maybe when a society is so pampered and free of problems, vigor is lost in the absence of struggle, and we strive to create artificial struggles to conquer.
Cross reference recent findings on longevity: occasional hunger, cold, and physical exhaustion contribute to health and long life.
Doesn't Taoistic teaching also discourage activism?

In my position of advantage, safe behind this side of the TV, everything that occurs on TV is entertainment. In that respect the rioters are not useless. The bulk of them maybe pawns in the hands of organized resistance fighting the 'fire' of police brutality with the 'fire' of civil indignation, but they are not useless; they may even appeal to my sense of justice. Dammit! Bring on the National Guard. Arrgh! (LOL)

You propose restraint thru your voting pressure, no doubt, which includes the support of deadly force should the occasion deem necessary.

I assume the expressed support by vote of a system of government includes the constitution of civil rights by default. By exercising your political opinion in support of your party of choice you accept expediencies provided by the constitution.

Peaceful marches with a charismatic leader got shit done back in the day. Looting is a tool of anarchists, defended by the media. People of color are saying peaceful protests haven't done any good, so what else do they have left?
Instead of marching coherently and advocating for police policy reform (a knee to the side of the neck is accepted policy in that precinct, the officer was doing what he was trained to do), they demand justice for murder while polarizing the situation further and wiping away any chance of increased sympathy by privileged white people.
I don't expect any good outcome from these demonstrations. I expect the cop will be acquitted and there will be more rioting. It all further supports my dim view of humanity.

Activism should be about making one's voice heard in a democratic forum. if it is more like terrorism, then there is something wrong.
The activists I know are not stealing people's attention, energy or lives. That is something I would not support.

This is short-sighted.
Its basically saying people haven't achieved anything until they've achieved it. The act of fighting for something by definition means they dont have it yet.
I mean would you say suffragettes were useless or counterproductive? I'm sure some of them did bad stuff. Some of them got big egos from it. But the movement created an empire. That is the endgame effect. Its undeniable.... now that we are post-suffrage. You think in the middle of the suffrage movement people weren't saying this same BS line?
Its Marie Antoinette as you can get.
We take a knee at a sporting event. "OMG YOU DONT RESPECT AMERICA" We organize with signs. "Look at these jobless idiots. GET A JOB!" We block traffic. "IMMATURE!"
What do you want done? A protest that you can't hear? Should we go in the woods and yell at the trees?
Some rioters are fucking shit. Looting is bad. Burning stuff is bad. But the movement must take place. The hurt must be shown. It is visceral. It is reactionary. But its real. People see that man being choked to death and it ENRAGES them. And I say fuck yeah. The police need a fixing in america. I dont like this GUNGHO fucking god complex bullshit we have to put up with.

Carrie burns down the High School prom because people laughed at her. There are similarities between these two examples. Defending crimes of passion based on the emotional breaking points is short-sighted imo, all too soon the bully in us will take advantage of it.

I wonder what justice means in this case. Will less racist cops do the trick? To an extent. But if I’m black I would be looking for other causes of depression.

Is change the rational outcome, or slapped fingers and the release of emotional energy and youthful vigor? This reminds me of smaller scale soccer hooliganism that is an expected recurrence.

Most people aren't aware using an arm or leg on the side of the throat is not just accepted, but taught in that precinct (and probably many others). It's in the manual. It's considered non-lethal.

Dam. Well that doesn’t bode well for justice. People do jump to conclusions and idk what for sure happened and context but it sounds like the cop probably was a little too “by the book” and didn’t think to adapt to the situation as it unfolded. Or he’s a racist ass out to kill. Either way way I hope he gets something. Imo
