Is their something wrong with these cakes? * 1
    #26705693 - 05/29/20 08:31 PM (3 years, 8 months ago)

Hello, I didn't let these get to full 100% colonization, meaning that their were some areas that weren't completely white but had white around them. 1 cake is taking longer than the other to fruit. I mist twice daily and have sufficient FAE. They had rolled around in perlite on accident, is this is a issue? Should I keep fruiting? THANK YOU!

Wait, so all that white, chunky shit on them is perlite, not mycelium?

Yes but their is mycelium underneath it lol this pic was from hours ago but now I see little pinheads coming up. I am seeing a blue slick around the cake but it doesn't come off with a q tip so I am assuming it's just bruised and not mold.

Both cakes took a roll in the perlite because I knocked the box around.

All right I thought that was some wild aerial mycellium at first or something. Well first off wipe all of the perlite off of the surface of the cake. I'd suggest washing your hands and being gentle with the myc as not to bruise it.

Looks like bacteria and maybe mold. What kind of cakes are these?

They probably didnt colonize all the way from the bacteria being in there and they look grey-blueish either from mold or brusing from being dry and stressed.

Why the plastic underneath? its covering a lot of the perlite.

Should I wipe it off now while pinheads are formed underneath or should I wait until I flush it? Thank you!

I looked at it and compared and to me it didn't seem like either one of those because it didn't come off when I wiped and that everything seems to fit what the mycelium looks like when exposed to air or when it is kept in the bag too long (brown color). I put the plastic wrap (bpa free) underneath as to not cause any more stress/damage.

Should I just get rid of it?

Not if you have pins. But I wouldn't expect a large flush. If you briefly go through your process we can possibly tell you where it went wrong

Lol. No. Sorry. If it's putting out fruit, let it fruit. Just listen to these guys. Gently remove the perlite and trim the plastic back so it's only as big as it needs to be to cover the footprint of the cake.

But the real problem was obviously that the jars had quite a bit of bacteria in them when they were colonizing

I had ordered grain spawn bags off of amazon, they were "sterilized" as advertised with self healing injection ports (i used tape for extra precations), I took a shower, sprayed room down with fungicide and the bag as well along with my hands/arms. I wiped the injection port with a bleach or alcohol pad, heat the spore syringe up until glowing red and injected. Sealed back up. Mixed after white had colonized 70% of the bag. Took out of bag but did not notice a small corner piece of one wasn't fully colonized, and the bottom of another wasn't fully colonized. Washed out the container where they are at now, placed perlite in a strainer and rinsed with hot water. Placed perlite in container and placed cakes on top, cakes rolled on perlite on accident.

Can I do anything about potential bacteria?

And their wasn't any odd colors in the spawn bag either, just white from the mycelium. Sure it is bacteria and not just bruising and/or reaction to air?

You can't do anything about bacteria now, if that's what you're asking.

I would guess there's three primary factors to the dirty spawn issue:

Using a spore syringe as is
Putting spores straight to grain, instead of a BRF cake
Ordering pre-sterilized and pre-hydrated grains.

Fortunately all are easy to fix. Sterilize your own grain and learn a little agar, assuming you want to cultivate more. If you just want some goodies to trip balls off, I'd suggest using your spore syringe on BRF cakes (following PF Tek).

This stuff is so confusing, growing pot is 10000x times easier than this shit. I heard and read up that PF Tek was the worst way to do it out of all of them because it opens it up to higher chances of contamination. UGHHHH This shit is so annoying. I might just give up and stick with lsd. Just mix my last 2 remaining bags in coco and put it in the back yard by a tree.

PF Tek it is! It looks easier and is cheaper. Now just need a pressure cooker.

That mycelium looks very thick and yellowish, with uncolonized grains visible(which reminds me,: gently wash off anything uncolonized, as well). It sort of resembles torrone, but in a bad way. That's caused by bacteria, as far as I know
