So I’ve taken Syrian rue more than any other plant medicine/psychedelic. It’s done wonders for my depressive tendencies and overall improved my quality of life without much trade off. Except…

The taste. I can’t stand it anymore. After drinking the tea dozens and dozens of times my body has developed a kind of knee-jerk gag reflex than makes drinking the stuff quite difficult. I haven’t thrown up yet but I’ve come damn close a few times and nothing would suck more than immediately vomiting up something you’ve just spent 30-45 min prepping.

So my question to you intrepid biochemical explorers is: what is your for go-to strategy dealing with the taste? I already boil it down to the minimum possible amount of liquid and swig it as quickly as possible.
I’ve read some people mix it with a bit of OJ?

The other day I absentmindedly brushed my teeth after preparing some tea, and thought I was in for a whole new universe of mouth disgust with the combination of the toothpaste flavour and bitter death taste of the rue. However the toothpaste actually masked it a fair amount – it was still very strong no doubt, but not that overwhelming mouth/throat coat of foulness.

I know the best solution is making an extract, but my lockdown co-habitation situation limits what I can get up to in the kitchen. So it’ll be at least another 2 months or so before that experiment happens. So until then – any tips?

Wow, true.  Avoid the taste altogether.  Idk how viable boofing Harma’s are but I’m sure there are some resources & experiences about it on the web.

The better you hold your nose, and combined with mixing the extract into a very heavily flavored drink (cherry Vanilla Coke or Orange juice etc - w/e works for you) + a shot to chase afterwards that down to get rid of residual taste.... the easier it can go down if your set on drinking it.

You might try roasting, grinding and encapsulating them.  That will at least get them down.

I don't use the tea, i always use capsules, i've consumed the raw seed powder in capsules, the roasted seed powder in capsules, freebased full spectrum extract in a capsule and freebased purified Harmala extract in a capsule, capsules are the way to go, extracts (preferably full spectrum) is the cleanest way to go, however roasted seed powder encapsulated is imo the best way to go if you want true full spectrum and wanna work with the actual plant compared to the extracts. The raw seed powder encapsulated works, but is rougher on the gut compared to the roasted seed powder.

To roast the seeds, all you do is preheat the oven to 350 degrees, put the whole seeds on a pan, and bake for approx 19 minutes or less, depending on the amount of seed you're roasting, you can also roast them in a skillet/pan on the stove top on like medium low to medium high heat, stirring here and there. Then you powder up the roasted seeds using a coffee grinder, and encapsulate the resulting powder. I haven't had any issues with nausea or vomiting using the roasted seed powder in capsules.

The extracts are easy to make though, and only require boiling up a bulk tea, reducing it down to like 400mls, add a splash of vinegar, and then some washing soda water which precipitates out the crude full spectrum extract, which can be filtered off, and cleaned  up a few times for pure full spectrum extract by redissolving it in acidic water, filtering, and re-basing with washing soda water. And then can be further purified, by dissolving it in acidic water, then diluted, heated up on the stove top, add salt, dissolve it in, sit in the fridge for a few days, and the purified Harmala extract is precipitated out, and it can be filtered off and kept as is or filtered off and based for the freebased form. When it comes to extract, i always use the freebased extract, it works just fine orally, and can be smoked, or used sublingually, even insufflated.

Good advice. Chasers! I use strong chasers like fresh oranges when drinking San Pedro tea. Salty Vinegar chips help as chasers as well.

I've done whats called parachute where you put some alkaloids in a joint paper and ball it up. Tear off the excess paper and swallow the parachute with a drink.worked well for harmalas.

This is super interesting. I thought the whole point of tea was to filter out the solids because that's what caused the nausea, but taking roasted solids causes no nausea? I think I'll give this a try, hopefully it'll work well enough to hold me until I can do a proper extract.

Have you ever tried making a tea from the roasted seeds to see if the nausea being cancelled from roasting carries over to a tea?

The nausea from the tea is more from the strong gag reflex than the body load - after keeping things down initially it's generally smooth sailing from there. So roasted seeds in capsules seem to be the best bet for now, then full extract in capsules in future.

Unless roasting the seeds before making tea from them improves the taste?

It might make them taste funkier if you roast them before making a tea but there could be a trade off with the roasting cancelling out nausea.  So you would just have to pick your poison, taste or possible nausea..:shrug:

Yeah, guess the only way to find out is to once again put many weird things in my mouth for science. Hmmm, foreseeing many "fun" experiments and results  :nyan: . Going through all this really is a testament to how good rue is though - I would probably take it everyday if it wasn't for the maoi interactions.

Well the roasted seed seems to get rid of some of the oils or what not that i think contributes to nausea and vomiting, so encapsulating the roasted/dried powder seems to do better than the raw powder.

I have made tea once from the roasted seed, it was palatable/drinkable, but still tasted pretty bitter, not nearly as funky tasting as the raw seed tea though imo, but still kinda difficult to drink, so i prefer capsules, but as far as the roasted seed tea went, didn't notice any nausea or vomiting.

Yeah the gag reflex is more what i'm concerned about when drinking a tea, as i mentioned above though the roasting may improve the taste a bit, i found it drinkable especially with some sugar and a little creamer added to it, but still tasted pretty bitter, may work out better if one could mix some sort of flavoring or something with it to help mask the bitterness.

If you already made tea out of the seeds an extract is easy to do.
Just filter your tea well, add some white vinegar, stirr well, then add some sodium carbonate solution untill the liquid turns white.
Let stand for a few hours to help settle down the solids, then filter out the precipitate, let dry, done.

You can clean up the crude extract to get it more pure, but basically that's it.
To clean it up just redissolve in water + vinegar, again add soda solution, filter out the solids.
Cleaned up twice it should lead to a white powder that is almost 100% pure harmalas. The first crude extract is brown and like 80% pure.

100g of seeds lead to ~3g of extract. 200mg of that is a full dose already, like 5g of seeds. Fits into a small capsule, no taste no nausea.

If I may ask, what's the purpose of the vinegar in this process? I downloaded a Willy Myco video a while ago where he makes extract using only water and lye - nothing acidic involved. I'm now wondering if perhaps following that video may not be a good plan. Unfortunately the video was taken down so I can't post a link to it (only have the mp4 on my comp).

Yeah I'm really looking to when I can finally do the extraction process - all the benefits of harmalas without the downsides! :cool:

I didn’t use any acid, just poured a strong solution of sodium carbonate and everything fell out.  Then I would use acid/vinegar when I would dissolve the freebase to do a manske.

I would pour a splash of vinegar into the water when I originally boiled the seeds though but once you have it boiled and filtered you can go straight to basing it.
