Funky APE myc or trich?
    #26704148 - 05/29/20 10:07 AM (3 years, 8 months ago)

Hello everyone, I had an old LC syringe from a failed grow attempt with my sister from last year. It was contaminated as all hell but I tried my hand at cleaning it up on agar. A few transfers later, I had some clean but funky looking plates. I know APE is a weird one but I have no experience with it and the age of the culture doesn't help. I noticed a fine white fuzz on the surface of the sub yesterday that almost looked like cobweb but I let it go til today.

On the plate it behaved similarly, a very fine spread of myc that slowly thickened up, same thing inside the jars.

But it kinda looks like trich to me lolol but I don't think trich starts out looking cobwebby. Just wanted a second opinion or someone with more experience with APE.

On another note, I've read that APE can benefit from a casing layer. That just gets put on top once fully colonized or should I not bother with it?

What characteristics are you using to state it is mold? Just wondering as I am new and I have similar situation. Thanks

The way it looks frosted and lumpy. Almost had a makeup container sheen and texture. I am 100% that it is mold. I would get it outside asap.

Say this were a tub you spawned rye grain into and you used a 1:1 ratio.
You know that cubes at this ratio will colonize relatively at the same speed which would make for more even colonization.
What we see in the pics are third party hyphae growing from spores that have landed on top of your coir which are now spreading across the top of your substrate.
If this were myc growing from bellow we would see much different characteristics such as rhizomorphic hyphae reaching upwards, not tomentose growth digging inwards.

Thanks for the replies, I'll go chuck it. It's been about 10 days. Spawn mustve been bad or I cleaned up mold on the agar instead of myc lol smelled pretty mushy though. Both APE boxes did the same thing so I'll chuck those buggers now

I actually think it is the opposite mushhead.

That is dirty spawn and the Trich is growing out of the mix below the top layer on the coir. But it is also mixed in with the Mycelium.

From my perspective it seemed like it was moving its way down instead of moving its way upwards. However our conclusion remains the same lol.
