Why does this site look so ancient

How come this site still looks like it did 10 years ago? I mean it's not terrible but seeing how active it still is im surprised it looks so archaic. As a new user it's pretty difficult to navigate... is it meant to be like that to deter people outside the community snooping? or maybe the fbi will see 10px font and won't bother?
I dont get it

Looks fine to me. What should it look like? IG maybe? Lol
It’s a forum, it looks like a forum. Also I remember when shroomery was small and didn’t even look like this, i recall a FAQ about “The Bemushroomed State”

Personally I love the old forum aesthetic.
I used to read a bunch of forums, and now I use reddit 99% of the time. It's nice to have something that reminds me of the old days.
In any case, it works, right? If it ain't broke, as they say...

Sure some of the icons are bit dated but i think they're charming.
Also, what theme are u using OP? I find the yellow version to look the oldest (probably cause ita the very first theme ever made).

And might I add, we are THE MOST CUSTOMIZED FORUM ON THE INTERNET, at least AFAIK.
We got Holy Shit functionalities.
We got functionalities to modify your preference for the functionalities.
I proposed to Ythan to perhaps contract a Chinese coding shop to morph the site into something a lot more 2020. It would not be too expensive, and we could set it up as a mirror site, so people can choose between the site from the Archean, and that from the Technozoic.
They could code the new site empty and a transfer tool and we could apply both and create an equilibrium.
I think at some point in the future the site will attain a Virtual Reality dimension, but we may be talking 2030 here and so far I'm the only admin dreaming that dream, at least out loud.

Free-to-play Desktop VR exists since 2003
It has even gone Open Source
there are highly promising USER HOSTED universes emerging
At some point we might buy a module and add a functionality where you can create a YOU how you wish to appear and join us by a synthetic campfire on the beach of a paradoisical tropical Shroomery Island, chatting by text or microphone, voice distorted to fit your character or for privacy if desired, and our Shroomery Island will have become a virtual reality. It could have education and recreation aspects too. There could be a museum dedicated to our best shroom pics, lectures and exhibits on how to ID shrooms, games, all sorts of fun.
Think of the fun and mayhem, you need not even be human!

Out-of-the-box virtual worlds to integrate into your website will become a thing and an affordable thing too as we move towards 5G, 6G (being worked on already!) and petabyte computing.

Think of the fun!
I'm in virtual worlds since 2007 and I tell you its the future.
The technology needs a little maturing and its good to go.
The forum could have a link, the link allows you to login a character you made and you log them in on the Shroomery planet. Coding this is not Ythan's speciality, but MODULES THAT DO THIS will become an article of commerce to pimp up your site with a VR addition.
Leave it to China and other cheap snazzy coding factories.
I have hosted virtual wolds on my pre-2016 computer. As you can tell by the date, it doesnt cost much CPU or drive space to do so. Its super lightweight. Bunch of pixels with the planes built by them filled up with textures (voxels work differently but you catch my drift)

14 posts in 10 months means he is turned off by the oldtime look of the site to such an extent that posting here turns him off. As he represents a demographic, we all do, this is noteworthy.

Personally, and thats not to toot our own horn, I find the format of posting here much more user friendly than posting in a group in facebook.
1) sooo many features here to customize the posts, including cinematic smileys 2) we let you get away with sooo much that would get you banned from facebook outright (nsfw) 3) we have such an intelligent, supportive intelligent and engaging crew of people here

WE HAVE THEMES.
Check out Vintage Shroomery, been rocking that for over 15 years now.
To me the Shroomery is yellow, like the sun, like gold, the color of abundance and majesty.
Much love to who made Deluvian Blue because sapphire blue is a high vibration color, associated with authority and success, its the theme that made the Shroomery great.
Blue is a YANG color, (upsurging) red is a YIN color (diminishing).

Personally, I love the layout exactly because it is that traditional forum type. I would hate to see shroomery turn into looking more like some social media site, for example reddit, goddamn. Shroomery is unique and surprisingly easy to use. And there are different themes to suit personal tastes! I like the default one, but maybe I'll change to something now

Lol @ tripsurfer. I agree with that yellow and other colors being so bright they scorch my eyes which are used to the soothing dark-teal (?) theme.

Deluvian Blue (the default blue theme) makes me feel I'm in a dark cave in winter, Vintage Shroomery makes me feel I'm out in the sun in summer.
I have 30 watt LED overhead in my small computer room. I enjoy illumination.
Deluvian Blue looks like mushrooms are in season though, cold and wet

ah dont be so sensitive it was only a question.
I really didnt mean to complain, just genuinely curious if this is all part of a 'vintage' aesthetic I've been visiting the shroomery regularly for a few years and I'll admit it's growing on me with time. And I dont want glitter and cat filters but I think it would be cool to add things like notifications for when someone replies to your post for example. A little css work to make it softer on the eyes. It's difficult to learn how to navigate as a newcomer cause theres so many buttons and options and ways to navigate.
I think the mirror site idea would be great, maybe add one where its cleaned up a bit, with less buttons and options for newcomers to get used to it without being overwhelmed. I still dont get how to find new threads, do you go through each topic in the forum index?
The VR idea is really cool

I don't recall ever thinking that this board was confusing to navigate, though I've been using forums almost twenty years. It's interesting that you don't think it's simplistic. I started learning web development last year (HTML and a little bit of CSS) and I was lost soon after I started CSS. I will start learning some day again. I'd like to learn other things that maybe could prepare my mind for it. This thread makes me want to look into learning features I've never used here before. It's good that not everything is so simple! Of course you don't want things to be complicated just to have a discussion, but it's not complicated. Just gotta get used to it.
As far as the "ancient" thing, I prefer the look of old style websites. And the funny thing to me is, the look of this message board actually doesn't look dated. This looks modern and professional. It looks like a website that's been around a long time that evolved without completely changing a look.
For example, this old Golden State Warriors logo is beautiful and a classic:

Here's their main logo they came out in 2010 (thought it was more recent for some reason, but still recent enough:

Both are classic, simple, and beautiful. The newer shows a little bit more modern to it, but it shows a classic look as well.
Also take the Chicago Bulls logo. This has been around since 1966 and is timeless. I bet most people wouldn't want it changed.

Here's an example of modernized logos that aren't as good as the older ones:
Charlotte Hornets

New Orleans Hornets (they moved)

The modernized Hornets logo:

This logo doesn't have the details as the original. It's not like the original had too much details either. The fingers don't have the character the original has Simplicity is fine, but modern art is overly simplified. This isn't even a bad logo. I like it more now than I did back when it was new in 2008, but I'm using it to get my point across. A lot of modern logos/designs are blocky, have no character, no depth, looks like somebody just took a "professional" template, etc.
The problem to me isn't old styles, the problem is new styles don't offer anything and reflects modern things in general. More effort and individuality can bring much more aesthetically pleasing, in the case of art/websites, results.
I've been meaning to check out different layouts on here. Haven't in many years. I'm about to.I just checked what layout I have now and it's Royal Red. Was my favorite when I was going through them when deciding on one and I still love it.

yes, after sticking around long enough and using it regularly we'll learn the buttons i wont argue that But what about the rest of the world that lands on this site from a google search of "how to grow mushrooms at home"? They dont know what the buttons do and most won't stick around to find out, so a simplified version for them would be convenient
Now if you don't care about the outside world or newcomers then I guess this is a moot point anyways

The line of buttons with "Forum Index, Search Posts, Best Posts etc." The tabs on the top right with "Home, Mushroom Info, Community, Gallery" and their descendants Things like the buttons beneath each post to "print post, remind me, block user, etc."
Don't get me wrong they're all useful and there's a lot of functionality but there's just so many options that it's a little overwhelming to go through all of them to see what they do, and in reality i think most new people just want to see a 'front page' of all the new topics being talked about, with one or two buttons for their profile page and posts, and a few other basics.

I like it how it is. It's perfectly functional and familiar.
Same....
I honestly hope this layout/interface never changes, or at least remains an option.
To me it's not "old" looking at all, it's a classic forum layout/interface . What needs to change? It functions just fine.
And I've seen a handful of folks over the years mention that this website/forum is difficult to figure out & navigate....I don't understand that at all. To me it is super simple & basic, it's a classic internet forum layout/interface, the same way forums have been for a long time now.
Anyone that says they have difficulty navigating and figuring out how to do things around here, I assume they're young and have never been on a forum before. I don't get that at all, it's very user friendly and intuitive to me, very basic & straight forward.

This is exactly how a good forum looks IMHO. Fast, sleek, functional, focus on loading content.
Keep this shit exactly as it is, there are plenty of other skin options. I use the grey/blue.

I stuck with the vintage look for a while, once I found you could change the look. Cause the vintage was what it was when I discovered the shroomery. Now I use the dark theme with the Mayan calendar in the background.
